If It's Too Loud...

It's been a couple of years since we've heard from Massachusetts based musician Doug Tuttle, so a new song from him is a little extra welcome right now. "Lead Mask" still has that 70's era singer/songwriter vibe we've loved in Tuttle's previous releases, but this new song sounds a bit more modern. Interspersed with the chill 70's vibe is some indie psychedelic guitar soloing and some modern bedroom pop amenities, particularly the drums. We're always in favor of an artist branching out their sound a bit, especially when they keep intact what we've always loved about their music.  You can listen to "Lead Mask" below. When there's a new song from Boston's Doug Tuttle, we know what to expect at this point. "Did You Need Someone" fits in perfectly with Tuttle's previous work. The new song is 70's era influenced singer/songwriter fare. It's laid back not-quite-folk with a mellow groove. But Tuttle does this sound so adeptly it's practically perfect. We've been enjoying Boston area musician Doug Tuttle's solo work for a while now, and his newest single won't be changing that. "I'll Throw It All Away" continues Tuttle's psychedelic bedroom singer/songwriter dream pop vibe, and you'll get no complaints from us on that. "I'll Throw It All Away" adds in a bit of country twang into the equation, sounding a bit like Brian Wilson trying on a cowboy hat. We're just over a week away from the release of Doug Tuttle's third solo album, and he's shared another song off of it. "Only in a Dream" is absolutely breathtaking. George Harrison has long been my favorite Beatle, and seeing as "Only in a Dream" sounds like an outtake from All Things Must Pass , I'm fully on board. Plus, seeing how Tuttle recorded the entire album in his Somerville, MA bedroom, the production is absurdly good to rate comparison's to Harrison's classic solo debut. It's a beautiful, gently strummed song with a guitar riff that loops around and just sucks you straight in. You can listen to "Only in a Dream" below. Although "Bait the Sun" sounds like pure southern California, Doug Tuttle is currently residing in Somerville, MA. The former frontman of MMOSS is set to release his third solo album next month. Tuttle played all the instruments on Peace Potato  and recorded it in his bedroom.  A lot of people are negative towards this digital age of recordings, and while I love the 90s 4-track home recording era, you could never have anything as lush as "Bait the Sun" 25 years ago. It's pure pop, although leaning more towards modern folk than dance music. It's just dreamy and a wee bit trippy, with horns throughout. There are traces of MMOSS's psychedelia, but only in that "Bait the Sun" has a 60s feel to it. Like all good psychedelic pop, the song is shocking in how layered it is. On first listen, it's just this simple, feel good pop song, but after a few listens you start noticing all these brilliant little details inside of it. You can listen to ...

This is a weird week of "Very Good." Why You Should Listen : You enjoyed, for example, Leyla McCalla's album from a while back, and don't mind some Spanish language in your Tex-Mex. Overall Thoughts : I won't lie, I do tend to struggle with non-English lyrics in my music. I don't pay attention to lyrics much as it is, but the ability to sing along even if I'm not paying too much notice to the words is always a plus. I've been a fan of Carrie Rodriguez for some time now even though I'm not great at keeping up with her output, and even the album cover alone demands some attention.
