The Boston based musician has a new single out that is unquestionably pop, but has a strong indie rock sensibility to it. "Flowers Pt. 1" is a truly great song. It starts off in the singer-songwriter realm before the pop hooks and melodies kick in. It might be the use of guitars that helps the song appeal to fans more interested in rock based music, plus Connolly has an unmistakable blues side to their vocals. "Big Amygdala" is a shockingly fun song that is overflowing with 80's synth pop goodness. The song sounds like it belongs in that obscure 80's teen movie that you used to watch endlessly on repeat but can't quite remember the name of. It's ridiculously fun, and adds in an interesting 00's pop punk sound as well. "Quiet" sees the Boston artist blow away all expectations with pop music. The song is firmly a pop song, but Connolly does things so differently than the vast majority of pop musicians out there. It sounds like the pop rock of the 90's mixed with modern alt-pop and the creative explosion of 60's pop music. Throughout "Quiet," I was consistently blown away by the unexpected directions the song kept taking. It's a charming song that is impossibly catchy, with enough twists to keep even the snobbiest music fans engaged and entertained for its entire length. For her latest single, Boston singer-songwriter Kerrin Connolly has written a fan letter to the TV show Severence. "Cut" is a rock based singer-songwriter track with a very strong pop edge. It's the kind of song that both a light and fun pop song and a rocker with an edge. It seems to fade back and forth between the two styles, never quite fully committing to either one. And then there's a glorious crescendo towards the end that will fully make you a fan if you aren't already one by that point. For me, it sounds like the alt-pop sensibilities of Megan at Work mixed with the theatrical indie pop rock of Lucy Dacus, along with a harder edge garage rock guitar.
