If It's Too Loud...

Even though Jeff is the official blog Ace of Base fan, I'm going to take this one. Peach Kelli Pop has become a favorite around here due to Allie Hanlon's fantastic mixture of bubblegum pop and garage rock. It's almost like a hyper version of sugary music like The Archies. Their upcoming EP is going to consist of covers, and the first song is a cover of Ace of Base's "The Sign." (Shockingly The Sign was released in 1993 even though I would have put it around 1997 or so.) Peach Kelli Pop's version speeds up the original and makes it almost pop punk but leaning quite heavily into the pop side... but in a great way. It continues Allie Hanlon's move towards more serious pop music that she started with "Cut Me Off." And "Stupid Girl" is a pure pop song, but borrowing from multiple genres. There is plenty of the indie pop the kids are going crazy about these days mixed with vintage southern California vibes a la The Beach Boys. Throw in some of the lo-fi fuzz artists like Colleen Green have been mesmerizing us with, and we're fully on board for this new sound from Peach Kelli Pop. Peach Kelli Pop, aka Allie Hanlon, has gotten a lot of attention here at If It's Too Loud... for good reason. The band's earlier work was great, but it could be a little too cute at times. Hanlon's sound has matured quite a bit with her new single, "Cut Me Off." The new song has a slight dream pop vibe, but with more of an edge. The sound is still sugary sweet, but with a more lived in, experienced feel. It hearkens back to the girl group sound of the 50's, but with some modern cynicism thrown in. That could be from the subject matter of "Cut Me Off." According to Hanlon, " "This song is about lacking the strength to walk away from a situation you know is harmful to you. It's about really wanting a relationship to work (whether it be romantic or a friendship) and hanging on, but knowing deep down that it won't work out." You can listen to "Cut Me Off" below. Mavis Staples - Your Good Fortune : Mavis Staples is a legend in her own right, and this quick hit EP is a great reminder/introduction into why. A good soulful gospel quick hit, it may not be your favorite thing she's done, but it's still a worthwhile listen. Passion Pit - Kindred : Passion Pit goes back to basics somewhat with this third album. The falsetto is back, the electronica more pronounced, and, while it still feels more mainstream than their debut, it's still strange enough to feel like a return to form. In a way, they feel a lot more like Washed Out than I expected. Otherwise, though, if you were a fan of the first album and couldn't quite get into the second, this one is something you should really give a shot. Photo by Bekah Cope With their new album, III,  coming out April 21 on Burger Records, Peach Kelli Pop have just released a video for "Princess Castle 1987." The song clocks in at right around 1:30, and is a perfect slice of sugary pop punk that's very light on the punk. The video features all four members of the band dressed in Princess Toadstool dresses, running around Los Angeles looking for a castle (Spoiler alert: They find one!). If "Princess Castle 1987" and the previously discussed "Plastic Love" are any indication, III  is going to be a fun as hell release next week. III  will be released April 21 on Burger Records. Photo by Kelsey Reckling Based out of Ottawa, Peach Kelli Pop started in 2009 when drummer Allie Hanlon started writing some of her own songs about video games, conspiracy theories, and the challenges women face. "Plastic Love" is the first I've heard of the band, and it's completely up my alley. It's just fun, poppy, and catchy as all hell. It reminds me of Bis mixed with Letters to Cleo. At just over two minutes long (which is all they really need) it's an alternative pop song in line with the Ramones. Peach Kelli Pop's third album, obviously called III , will be out on Burger Records April 21st. You can listen to "Plastic Love" below, and below that find some of their current tour dates.
