Wicked Bears - "Lucky"

Image
Salt Lake City's Wicked Bears are pop punk in the best possible way. Their new single, "Lucky," has that great 90's throwback feel to it. It's aggressive and a little bratty, but it's almost impossibly catchy. At first listen it's a little dumb, but the more you listen the more clever it becomes. It's a funny and silly song while being a truly heartfelt love song in disguise. "Lucky" is the kind of song that you might be a little embarrassed for liking at first, but by the time it's over you're going to end up wholeheartedly loving it. Instead of making you feel old, it's going to remind you of everything you enjoyed about being young. Wicked Bears say of their new song: "If you've ever dedicated $20 to a claw machine and gone home empty-handed, this song is for you. If you've ever felt like, no matter what road you take, there's gonna be a dead end at the end of it, this song is for you. If you've ever been a...

Momma - "Lucky"

Image
Photo by Sophie Hur Brooklyn's Momma have released a single that is going to be intensely nostalgic for those of us in our early to mid-forties. "Lucky" has that mid-90's alt-rock power pop sound that was all the rage then. Think bands like Weezer and Veruca Salt. It's all crunchy guitars and slacker solos. It's the kind of song that is deceptively heavy even though it's mid-tempo but filled with dreamy pop hooks. Plus, never before has anyone sung in a 90's slacker style as well as Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten do here. This song is much more poppy than we would have ever admitted in 1995, but this would have gone straight to the Buzz Bin back in the day. Etta Friedman says of the new song: “I wrote it after my significant other and I had to spend an unknown amount of time apart from each other on opposite sides of the country. I wanted it to feel anthemic, like a sappy and sentimental love song, but I still wanted to speak on how exciting it f...

NOVA ONE Covers Britney Spears

Image
Photo by Rich Ferri It's impossible for us not to be fans of NOVA ONE's debut album lovable from earlier this year. Now Roz Raskin's musical project has released their cover of Britney Spears's hit "Lucky." There is a studio version of "Lucky" on the vinyl release of lovable , but this is the only non-vinyl version of this song. It was recorded roughly seven years ago in December 2019 in Big Nice Studio. It's a stunningly gorgeous version of the song, keeping the modern pop sound of Britney's original but adding the indie rock meets doo wop sound that makes us obsessed with NOVA ONE. For cover song fans like us, this is exactly the kind of thing that we love. You can watch the video for NOVA ONE's take on "Lucky" below. For more on NOVA ONE, check out the artist's website .
