Optic Sink - "Construction"

Image
Photo by Nate Packard It may not obviously be Halloween related, but the latest single from Memphis' Optic Sink came together because of Halloween. "Construction" started off when singer Natalie Hoffman crafted a live score for Halloween III. Listening to the song, you can definitely hear a John Carpenter influence in the synths. However, "Construction" grooves much more than Carpenter's scores, and it ends up being quite dance friendly. In fact, "Construction" pretty much demands that you dance to it. Despite (or perhaps because of) how creepy the song is at points, it's undeniably fun. Lyrically it might not be perfect for Halloween, but if you're constructing a party playlist based more on vibes, you could do a lot worse than the latest from Optic Sink. You can listen to "Construction" below. Lucky Number is due out October 31 on Feel It Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Optic Sink, check out the band o...

Tomato Flower - "Blue"

Image
Photo by Marie Mechin The latest single from Tomato Flower's upcoming EP continues their off kilter pop meets indie rock sound. "Blue" has a lot more harmony than you typically get with indie rock, but it's also a wonderfully quirky song that moves around in sonic directions that are completely unexpected. At times it snuggles right up to being a mainstream indie pop rock song, but then it wanders off into its very own territory again. Tomato Flower continue to be one of the more interesting artists out there right now by not fully committing to pop or indie rock and creating their own sound and path. You can listen to "Blue" below. Construction is due out August 5 on Ramp Local, and can be pre-ordered/pre-saved here . For more on Tomato Flower, check out the band's . Upcoming tour dates are below the song. 8-10 San Francisco, CA @ The Warfield 8-11 Portland, OR @ Crystal Ballroom 8-13 Vancouver, BC @ Vogue Theatre 8-16 Edmonton, AB @ Union Hall 8-17 Cal...

Tomato Flower - "Construction"

Image
Photo by Marie Mechin Although Tomato Flower just released an EP back in February, the Baltimore band are set to release a new one in August. "Construction" is the first single off of that release, and it's the kind of slightly off-kilter indie rock/pop that we enjoyed on Gold Arc. "Construction" is so close to being a fairly standard modern indie rock song that's edging into the world of pop. We love that sound here, and can't get enough of it, so that's hardly a knock. But Tomato Flower specialize in taking that sound and just switching it ever so slightly. Sometimes it's odd little tunings, or vocal harmonies just not quite harmonizing at the same time, but the band are masters of this just slightly off sound that is mesmerizing. You can listen to "Construction" below. Construction , the EP, is due out August 5 on Ramp Local and can be pre-ordered through Bandcamp .
