If It's Too Loud...

Photo via Facebook The Sinseers are quickly becoming one of our favorite neo-soul artists. The Los Angeles based "lowrider soul" group just released "Hold On," and it's absolute perfection. The song is new and not an oldie, but you could easily play it on an oldies station (are those still a thing?) and pass it off as a lost classic. "Hold On" is pure, vintage soul and R&B. The Sinseers have such a nostalgic and classic sound that I hesitate to refer to them as neo-soul. They only fit that designation by being modern, because there is nothing modern about their sound (except for maybe the production). You can listen to "Hold On" below. It took me a while to hop aboard the Rebuilder bandwagon, but now that I'm fully on I'm thrilled to bring you their latest song. "Hold On" is filled with that intense energy that is a hallmark of a Rebuilder song. It's upbeat and bouncy pop punk that is in stark contrast to the lyrical subject matter. It's a fast paced and heavy pop punk anthem about how terrible the world is and not knowing what to do about it. It's definitely not your typical pop punk subject, but Rebuilder isn't (but is?) your typical pop punk band. "Hold On" is perfect for live show sing-a-longs by being one of the most contagiously catchy songs around right now. Even if you typically turn your nose at pop punk, you owe it to yourself to give Rebuilder a chance. You'll thank me for this one some day. You can watch the video for "Hold On" below. We've been ridiculously obsessed with Squirrel Flower's album I Was Born Swimming since it was released earlier this year. One of the few good things about 2020 is that artist's are more likely to release extra songs, particularly covers. Back in May we received an additional single from Squirrel Flower, and now we have a cover of Tom Waits's immortal "Hold On." Sure, "Hold On" is one of the few obvious Tom Waits covers, but there's a reason: It's an impossibly great song. Ella Williams brings her unique vocals to the cover, adding a nearly haunting feel to the song accentuated by the sparse music that deviates from the original completely. Instead of the harsh folk of the original, Squirrel Flower gifts us with a bizarro dream pop rendition. You can listen to Squirrel Flower's take on "Hold On" below. When we discovered AZ's The Venomous Pinks, they were covering the Joan Jett & The Blackhearts classic "I Want You." They're back with an original song, which guitarist/vocalist Drea Doll calls " A coming of age punk anthem that gives a lifeline for those struggling to keep a dream alive." "Hold On" is exactly what you'd expect from a band that burst into our consciousness via a Joan Jett cover. It's tons of punk attitude and edge, but also catchy and fun as hell. The Venomous Pinks are promoted as a punk band, and sure, this is punk. But it's more pure straight up rock 'n' roll than punk, like The Donnas or Supersuckers.  You can watch the video for "Hold On" below. I fully expected to hate The Rock'n'Roll HiFives. In fact, I wanted to. Their lead singer, Eilee Centeno, is sixteen. Her thirteen year old brother plays drums. The rest of the band? Their parents. Guitarist/dad Joe Centeno played in bands before he became a dad, and the whole thing sounded like it would be this cutesy family band fueled by the dad's nostalgia.  But... their new single "Hold On" is actually pretty great. It's not revolutionary by any stretch, but it's good, solid guitar driven power pop. Eilee's vocals have this great attitude to them, most likely because she's actually a teenager and isn't just trying to tap into teen angst. "Hold On" isn't for you if you want something avant garde or groundbreaking. But if you just want some fun throwback rock in the realm of Cheap Trick and The Runaways, you'll find it here.
