Her latest single, "Gang Star," is interesting in that it's more of a straight up rock song and a straight up pop song than we normally hear from Red Ribbon. It has an insatiable groove and musically is a rocker, but Danner is singing more like a pop star than she normally does. It's a fun single with an underlying menace to it, and enough indie rock flourishes to keep the entire thing engaging. Emma Danner's musical project just released "YSFP," an acronym for You're So Fucking Pretty, and it's just dripping with raw emotion. The song could easily have been a lovely little pop song, but Danner's vocals are much too rough for that, and the music is just... odd. There's a sense of 90's style indie rock throughout the song, which keeps it from ever getting truly pretty. It's almost like the song was originally intended to be the pretty pop song it wants to be, but emotions and heartache got in the way and we're left with the brilliant result of "YSFP." "Crying My Car" is a slow song that is bristling with intensity. It's certainly not folk, or really a singer-songwriter style song, although there are those elements present. Red Ribbon has more of a left of center 90's alt-rock meets trip hop sound, kind of like if PJ Harvey worked with Portishead. "Crying My Car" is the type of song that is going to instantly grab you with its intensity, and make you want to listen to it repeatedly. Luckily, it's also the style of song that only gets more and more engaging with every listen. "High" is this kinda ramblin' song filled with acoustic guitar and crashing cymbals. Normally that combination wouldn't work at all, but Danner pulls it off. That's one of the truly fascinating thing about "High." It meanders through multiple genres without changing its feel. At times it feels more indie rock, at others more Americana, and others like it might be heading towards pop. And sometimes all three at the same time. "Document (Alternate Version)," has some serious 90's vibes. You'll hear a lot of what is now called dream pop in the song, but the guitars have too much of a 90's crunch to them for that.
