If It's Too Loud...

Last month I went on a bit of a Universal monster movies kick, which included watching 1933's The Invisible Man. To help keep the theme going, Fred Abong has released a new song called "Invisible Man." The latest solo single from the Throwing Muses bassist is the kind of raw singer/songwriter track that upends the whole singer/songwriter thing. The song is just Abong's raw and unique vocals along with a distorted, clanging electric guitar. "Invisible Man" is going to repel more people than it draws in, but for those of us that get drawn in, it's going to take over a portion of our brain for a long, long time. 2018 is turning out to be a very busy year for Fred Abong. A founding member of Throwing Muses, he recently released his solo debut. Turns out he's also been working on a new project, The Pull of Autumn. The new band also features members of British New Wave band Fashion and fellow Rhode Island band Johanna's House of Glamour. Right now we can check out their first song, "Laurasong."  "Laurasong" is much quieter than early Throwing Muses. It's a very chill, fairly atmospheric song. It manages to be a beautiful, mellow song without being easy listening. It has some elements of New Wave and a little touch of some of the odd tunings of Throwing Muses, but it isn't obviously from either world. The same week we get a new song from Kristin Hersh, we can hear new music from another member of Throwing Muses! Once (and possible current?) Throwing Muses bassist Fred Abong is taking some time off from his college professor duties and has recorded his first solo release, Homeless . It's a six song collection of stripped down, just slightly off kilter solo singer/songwriter music. It's almost fairly standard, but just the slightest bit off to keep things interesting. "Rattler" is almost an epic, and could easily be turned into a large venue filling rocker, but it works equally well as a stripped down solo song. "Equinox" is a painfully quiet song that draws the listener inward in a way I haven't heard since Elliott Smith.  You can listen to "Rattler" below.
