The Cavemen - "Without You"

Image
Photo via Facebook The Cavemen are a New Zealand band that makes garage punk rock that harkens back to artists like the Ramones. Their new-ish single, "Without You," has Johnny Ramone's guitar tone down perfectly, but the song is a little more unhinged than the Ramones ever let themselves get. The Cavemen are less polished than their punk forefathers, but no less catchy. Ok, maybe a little less, but that's by design. "Without You" is a fast and loose noisy punk rock song, and the kind you'd expect from a band that, according to their Bandcamp profile, "... formed in high school over a love of glue and wild rock 'n' roll." You can listen to "Without You" below. Ca$h 4 Scrap LP is due out February 2 on Slovenly Recordings, and can be pre-ordered through Bandcamp . The Mardi Kings Cover Bo Diddley

Image
Photo via Facebook The Mardi Kings are a Boston supergroup of sorts. The band features members of some of the city's finest underground bands, such as Tunnel of Love, The Monsieurs, Shepherdess, Nice Guys, The Barbazons, Earthquake Party, and Miami Doritos. They've contributed to an upcoming Bo Diddley tribute album put out by Slovenly Recordings, and if this song is any indication, it's gonna be a weird tribute. "Pretty Thing" isn't going to sound like an obvious Bo Diddley song. All the typical structure of a blues song has been drained out, and instead it's an electronic noise garage rock song. It's an impossibly bizarre version of a blues classic, but that's sometimes the kind of thing we're all in for. The standard chugging blues riff is still there, it's just an electronic squall now.  You can watch the video for The Mardi Kings' version of "Pretty Thing" below. Powersolo - "Backstab"

Image
I first discovered Denmark's Powersolo years ago when they opened up for Heavy Trash at the dearly departed TT the Bear's. Somehow, they slipped out of my mind until recently when I decided to look them up again. It was great timing since they are about to release a new EP. (Well, it says it's an EP, but it's two songs so it's more of a 7"...) The first song is "Backstab," and it's everything I remember loving about Powersolo. It's noisy and dirty garage rock that's still insanely fun and groovy as it possibly can be. This isn't slick early 2000's garage rock revival garage rock. This is the kind of garage rock actually made in garages in the 60's by young bands just trying to get it going, but will just be too weird for mainstream success. And it's glorious. You can listen to "Backstab" below. Transfixing Motherfucker EP will be out on Slovenly Recordings on February 8 and can be ordered here . For more on Po...
