If It's Too Loud...

Last year Kim Deal released an excellent solo album, Nobody Loves You More. It was unlike anything we had heard from the alt-rock legend in her decades long career, but still fit what she's always done perfectly. When it was announced that her solo tour would be coming to The Wilbur in Boston, I knew I wanted to go, especially since I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Taking the stage with ten other musicians (including two horns, a violin, a cello, and two back up singers), Kim Deal proceeded to play all of Nobody Loves You More  from start to finish. The songs had a new life live, with musicianship and the full use of an eleven piece band on full display. Kim Deal seemed a little nervous playing these songs live, and even commented on that feeling during the show. With Pixies and The Breeders, a lot can be covered up by pure alt-rock volume. Photo by Alex Da Corte Alt-rock legend Kim Deal is set to release her first solo album on Friday, and since no one can wait until then, she's released another single from the album. "Nobody Loves You More" is surprising in that it's much more orchestral and jazz-like than anything we've heard from Deal previously, but somehow this makes the most sense for a Kim Deal solo project. It's reminding me of a more quiet, less bombastic version of Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet." This is very different from Deal's previously released solo singles, which makes sense considering this is Kim Deal. Photo by Alex Da Corte It turns out "Coast" wasn't just a one-off single, because we're about to get a solo album from Kim Deal. The alt-rock legend has released a new single, and while it isn't what we'd expect from Deal, it's completely a Kim Deal song. "Crystal Breath" is almost like a dance song. It definitely sounds more electronic than her previous musical projects, but that hardly makes the song a pop song. Instead, the song sounds kind of like the kind of rock meets electronic music from the late 90's and early 00's, but an updated version of that. This one is a lot of fun, and it's great to see an established artist like Deal trying out some new sounds. You can watch the video for "Crystal Breath" below. Photo by Kristin Sollecito Not only did we not expect a new Kim Deal solo single this week, we certainly didn't expect it to be partially inspired by "Margaritaville." Deal wrote the song back in 2020 after going to a friend's wedding where the band, The Grape Whizzers, played a cover of the iconic Jimmy Buffet song with "... revelatory levels of low self-esteem." The song also dates back to 2020 when Deal stayed off-season in Nantucket, despite the fact that, as she says, "I hate the sun, beach and watersports." "Coast" is like a bizarro beach jam. It has all of the elements of a classic surf/summer song (including horns from Chicago's Mucca Pazza), but just not in that joyous summer way. It's a laid back indie rock song that might inspire you to sit on the beach, but only while hiding under an umbrella. "Coast" might be the greatest non-summery summer song of all time.
