If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Heidi Yowell There's a short but pretty great list of artists I've discovered from cover songs. The latest is Olive Vox. Olive Vox are brothers Parker James and Caden Shea. The duo started out in Orange County, CA but moved to Texas when they were still kids. During last year's lockdown, the two started forming their sound, which is described as psychedelic grunge. Given that, obviously Ty Segall is a perfect influence for the band. Their cover of "Finger" is spot on, although, if anything, it's even louder than the original. It's more polished than Segall's, but it's somehow more discordant and in-your-face. We'll have to keep an eye on Olive Vox to see where their own sound goes from here. In certain circles, Wasted Shirt are going to be a massively anticipated supergroup. That's because Wasted Shirt is Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt and Ty Segall. If you know who those two people are, you've already pressed play down below and are having your mind blown in the exact way you wanted to. If you don't, "Double the Dream" is as intensely groovy as it is noisy. It's a just over two minute blast of intensity, with just enough of a standard song structure to be a song, but pushing the boundaries of that. It's noise rock contained just enough to be almost traditional. And it's great. You can watch the video for "Double the Dream" below. Fungus II , the debut album from Wasted Shirt, will be out February 28 via Famous Class. You can pre-order the album at the band's Bandcamp . Still a slow summer, but some real gems here... Artist : Tyler Childers Album : Country Squire Quick Description : Great modernist classic country. Why You Should Listen : He's in a segment all his own. Overall Thoughts : It’s really stunning how truly pure and unfiltered the brand of country Tyler Childers puts together is. I almost want to call him the male Margo Price in some ways, because it nearly perfectly straddles the line between authentic and precious, but it equally does it a disservice – by doing something that no one else is really doing, Childers sets himself apart by doing what so many before have done. I can’t imagine enjoying traditional country music and not finding something to love about this record. Recommendation : Do not miss out on this. With what is a basically empty new release week, we may as well do a quick hit of some of the recent albums we missed. There was one release of note this week, though: Ty Segall - Ty Rex : Ty Segall is an artist we don't cover here a lot, but this is a pseudo-record-store-day compilation release of some of his T-Rex covers along with a cool version of "20th Century Boy" that hasn't seen the light of day yet. I'm a big T-Rex fan, and these takes are garage-muddled enough to be their own pieces in a way, but when it works, it works. As a covers album it's interesting, as garage rock album it's what you'd expect. Also out this week is a new Danzig album , but the less said about it the better. Anyway, we don't always catch the new albums when they first come out.
