If It's Too Loud...

While California's Hayley and the Crushers have edged a little away from their punk and garage roots towards punk, their latest single sees them edging back a bit. They're taking on The Go-Go's song "Lust to Love" from their iconic 1981 album Beauty and the Beat. While The Go-Go's have some solid punk roots, their music was definitely more pop than punk. Hayley and the Crushers take the song back to punk roots. In their hands it's a grungy and menacing song that still keeps the original's pop hooks intact. While still a fun song, it's a darker, more moody version.  You can watch the video for Hayley and the Crushers' cover of "Lust to Love" below. The song will be included on a twenty four song tribute album to The Go-Go's If You Gotta Go-Go, Go-Go Now which will be out this year on Sympathy for the Record Industry. As a card carrying music snob blogger, I like to pretend I'm above the ska punk cover. No self respecting music "journalist" would dare admit to liking a ska punk band releasing a cover of a classic song from the 80's! The audacity! Luckily I'm over forty and don't require this site to pay the bills, so I'm bringing you Bite Me Bambi covering The Go-Go's iconic "Our Lips Are Sealed." A ska cover of "Our Lips Are Sealed" is a perfect pairing. It's already a joyously fun song, and ska is a joyously fun genre. Plus, Bite Me Bambi are ridiculously fun, so there we go! Is Bite Me Bambi covering "Our Lips Are Sealed" a truly mind-blowing, life altering song? No, but it doesn't need to be. It's just fun. Unfortunately Tanya Donelly wasn't able to release a cover as part of her Sunday Series this week, but luckily this just happens to be the week that the first single from her upcoming covers album with the Parkington Sisters is out! As soon as this project was announced, I knew I couldn't wait to hear it. Donelly is a 90's alt-rock icon that has mellowed in the past twenty or so years, and The Parkington Sisters take traditional strings and harmonies and create some of the most uniquely original not-quite-traditional music out there. For the first single off their upcoming album, they're taking on The Go-Go's 1981 song "Automatic." The cover starts off with a lot more noise than I would have expected, but soon turns into a spot on traditional cover.
