Wussy are one of those bands that you're either going to be obsessed with or just don't get, with virtually nothing in between. They're also the kind of band that you'll become more and more obsessed with the more you listen, and their latest single solidifies that. "Inhaler" is a Lisa Walker song that leans more into the indie rock side of their indie rock meets county sound. The song is an intense slow burn that spirals its way around the listener in ever tightening loops. It's oddly hypnotic, and could very well be the song that turns non-fans into die-hards. Your favorite band's favorite band Wussy just released a new single off their upcoming album. "Sure as the Sun" is a Chuck Cleaver led song, and if you're already a fan, you know what to expect. Cleaver's songs tend to be on the rougher end of Wussy's Americana infected indie rock, and "Sure as the Sun" is both one of the stranger songs and kind of oddly accessible, too. This is the kind of music that can be an acquired taste. The uninitiated will hear this song and be confused, and some repelled. Others will be oddly intrigued and go back for another listen. Just a few weeks ago we brought you the latest single from Wussy Duo, the project of Wussy's Lisa Walker and Chuck Cleaver. Now we get to bring you the latest single from Wussy from their upcoming album, which is the first since the passing of guitarist John Erhardt in 2020. Maybe it's just that knowledge, but "The Great Divide" has a sense of melancholy even stronger than the typical Wussy song. It's a song that straddles the lines of Americana and indie rock, somehow both and neither at the same time. But that's kind of how the band has always operated. What's unique about "The Great Divide" is how uplifting the song is. It's an absolute epic track, and listening is making me both sad and hopeful. Photo by Patrick Monaghan Wussy Duo is the appropriately named duo of Wussy's Lisa Walker and Chuck Cleaver. They've been playing some Undertow living room shows this year, and they just released a single under the moniker. It's a cover of Bill Fay's "I Hear You Calling." The single is led by Walker, and it's just stunningly beautiful. It's less folk than the original, and a little more straightforward. Despite being performed by a duo, the cover could not be more lush and warm sounding. It's the type of song sure to stop listeners dead in their tracks and fully suck them in. Wussy was one of the first shows I had cancel when quarantine started back in March, and a dozen or so other cancellations later, it still hurts the most. To alleviate that pain a little, Wussy have released Ghosts  as a free download. It's not an album exactly. Wussy describe this release as "...  a free digital mixtape created to thank Wussy fans. It contains B-sides,  rarities, related projects and two previously unreleased tracks." Some highlights (besides the whole thing... this is Wussy, after all) include "Fly Fly Fly (Green Belt Version)," an absolutely gorgeous minimalist remix of "Jonah" by dj dq, an early rough mix of "She's Out There," an epic live version of "Shunt," and Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker doing an ultra-countrified "Mountain In Our Backyard." And here we go with the other half! Co-Album of the Week : Artist : Thao and the Get Down Stay Down Album : A Man Alive Quick Description : Latest album by the criminally underrated indie rock act. Why You Should Listen : It's an album that deserves a lot of attention and not to get overlooked. Overall Thoughts : I was a latecomer of sorts to Thao Nguyen. Her songwriting didn't grab me right away with her "breakout" of sorts, "Bag of Hammers," but every album she's done since then has improved on the blueprint she brings, and A Man Alive might be the best one yet. It takes some time to truly get off the ground, but by the time "Nobody Dies" hits I was completely and totally on board. It's a challenging record, for sure, but in a good way - if you're not a fan yet, this album might take a few spins to get you on the bandwagon, but I promise there's plenty of room.
