If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Mariam Waliji Last month I went a little nuts over Alexis Castrogiovanni's single "Someday My Thoughts Will Be Like a Range of Mountains." The cellist's classical/trip hop/folk/punk sound hit a perfect sweet spot for me. She's back with a new single off of her upcoming EP. "Ex-Girl" truly solidifies the trip hop comparisons, but trip hop being done with a cello. It's a more organic version of artists like Tricky and Massive Attack that somehow keeps the intensity intact. Just to make it a little more 90's, it's also reminding me of groundbreaking artists that went (somewhat) mainstream like PJ Harvey and Tori Amos. "Ex-Girl" is an intense, swirling, and beautiful new single that makes us even more intrigued by Alexis Castrogiovanni. You can listen to "Ex-Girl" below. Photo via Facebook According to the press release, the latest single from Quebec's Alexis Castrogiovanni "... employs genres from classical and folk from trip hop and punk." That sounds like a  ridiculous concept, but it completely nails "Someday My Thoughts Will Be Like a Range of Mountains." Despite using traditional folk and classical instruments, there is very little traditional with Castrogiovanni's music. Except when it is. This song is somehow both traditional and experimental, it's calming and intense at the same time. It's beautiful while being discordant to an extreme degree. Some of these sonic changes are like a slap in the face while others are like an embrace. "Someday My Thoughts Will Be Like a Range of Mountains" is going to lead to a die hard following for those of us this works for.
