Siichaq - "Project 3"

Image
Photo by Tyler Carty Atlanta's Siichaq (aka Kennie Mason) has a new single out that's filled with some glorious vintage 90's sounds. "Project 3" fits into the whole modern indie rock meets indie pop sound that we can't seem to get enough of the past few years. A lot of these artists get lumped in with the grunge label, but Siichaq actually is... kind of. The type of guitar noise present in "Project 3" is more akin to bands like Sonic Youth (who also got lumped into grunge at one point) that Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, especially since the noise lasts almost the entire sound. Plus, Mason's vocals have that perfect slacker style, which tends to be both 90's and 20's. There is also some sounds that could be guitar work but kind of sound like record scratches, which along with the song's laid back vibes gives it a Sonic Youth meets Portishead meets Liz Phair sound, and I don't know how to make you want to listen to "Project 3...

High. - "Catcher"

Image
Photo by Aleka Syntelis New Jersey's High. have just released one of the noisiest but loveliest singles of the year. "Catcher" is going to give you some serious 90's flashbacks, even if you weren't actually there. It's a slowed down song that borders on being a ballad, but never quite gets there. It's filled with fuzzed out and shimmering guitars and hushed vocals. The whole thing builds slowly to a glorious crescendo, incorporating some of the most glorious noise around. You can tell "Catcher" is a deeply heartfelt song that combines the lush emotion of Mazzy Star with the crunch and epic sound of Radiohead's first two albums. This is one you can't miss out on. Lead vocalist Christian Castan says of the band's latest single: "’Catcher’ explores the depths of grief and the unwavering hope that binds us to those we’ve lost."  You can watch the video for "Catcher" below. Come Back Down is due out January 24 on Kanine...

Catcher - "Behind a Bleeding Heart"

Image
Photo by Kevin Allen Catcher is a band that will demand your attention. The New York City based six piece have this wonderfully jangly and noisy take on post punk. Their latest single, "Behind a Bleeding Heart," is a great example of that. While a lot of NYC based post punk these days tends to be of the upbeat, dance friendly variety, "Behind a Bleeding Heart" is discordant and noisy. This is putting the punk back in noise punk and adding more than enough No Wave noise. That's not to say that Catcher aren't dance friendly. This song is relatively dance friendly... in it's own little way. It's this odd little duality of pushing you away while drawing you in that creates the hypnotic swirl that is "Behind a Bleeding Heart," and why we think you're going to love this. You can listen to "Behind a Bleeding Heart" below. The Fat of a Broken Heart is due out February 18. For more on Catcher, check out the band's website .
