Kim Gordon - "PLAY ME"

Image
Photo by Moni Haworth Kim Gordon's recent solo work has been more on the electronic/trap side of things, so her latest single is an almost complete departure. "PLAY ME" is much more laid back and has an underground hip hop feel to it. It sounds like the soundtrack to my high school summers, which isn't something I'd expect from Kim Gordon. While her recent singles have at least been hip hop adjacent, "PLAY ME" still comes off as surprising. This is a wonderfully chill song, and it's great that Gordon can continue to surprise us all this deep into her career. You can watch the video for "PLAY ME" below. The album PLAY ME is due out March 13 on Matador Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Kim Gordon, check out the artist's website . Upcoming tour dates are below the video. April 2 - Sid The Cat - Los Angeles, CA April 11 - Rewire Festival - Den Haag, NL April 12 - Variations Festival - Nantes, France April 14 - O2 Sh...

Kim Gordon - "NOT TODAY"

Image
Photo by Moni Haworth I don't think anyone is going to argue that Kim Gordon has had the most interesting solo career of any of her former Sonic Youth bandmates. She's been diving straightforward into a more electronic dance music sound, and playing in the trap genre. Her latest single, "NOT TODAY," sees the indie legend expanding her sound even more. This one is much more chill than her previous solo albums, and is more akin to her former band than she's gotten before. It has some of the indie rock noise I love (and miss), while still keeping her experiments with electronic music alive. Plus, there are little hints of soul and pop in "NOT TODAY," which I don't think anyone could have predicted. Kim Gordon keeps pushing the musical envelope, which is exceedingly rare for someone with more than four decades as a musician. Kim Gordon says of her latest single:  “I started singing in a way I hadn’t sung in a long time. This other voice came out.” You ca...

Kim Gordon - "BYE BYE 25!"

Image
Photo by Vice Cooler It's very rare for us to cover reworked versions of songs we've already covered, but most artists aren't Kim Gordon and most songs aren't as important as her new version of 2024's "BYE BYE." "BYE BYE 25!" keeps the hip hop/trap/noise sound of the original, but the lyrics have been changed to ones censored by the Trump administration. It's basically a list of words and phrases such as "gay," "commercial sex worker," "abortion," "diversity," "measles," "transgender," etc. It's not exactly a catchy song, but it's a vital reminder of the changes our government has undergone in just a few months. It's also exactly what we'd expect from an artist who has been so important for the past forty plus years. Kim Gordon says of her latest single: "(Producer and collaborator) Justin Raisen had this idea to redo ‘Bye Bye’ starting at the end of the song. Wh...

Kim Gordon - "Bangin' on the Freeway"

Image
Photo by Danielle Neu Kim Gordon's The Collective was released in March, and the artist has just announced a deluxe edition with two new tracks. "ECRP" was released in June, and the second was has just been made available. "Bangin' on the Freeway" continues Gordon's dive into modern electronic music, and is surprisingly accessible... as far as a Kim Gordon song goes. It's an experimental track and would be considered odd to a more mainstream listener, but I believe this is what the kids would call a banger. Gordon's post Sonic Youth music has been the most interesting of her former bandmates, and "Bangin' on the Freeway" continues that. You can watch the Coco Gordon Moore directed video for "Bangin' on the Freeway" below. The deluxe edition of The Collective is due out December 13 on Matador Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Kim Gordon, check out the artist's website . Kim Gordon x model home - "razzamatazz"

Image
Kim Gordon continues to push her creative envelope with her latest single, "razzamatazz," which is a collaboration with Washington DC's model home. The experimental duo and Gordon seem to be a perfect match, with electronic noise more laid back than we've heard from Gordon's previous solo releases, but with an intensity to match any era of her musical past. "razzamatazz" is another left turn from Gordon, but still fits in with her most recent album  The Collective. This is kind of a weird one, which means it's some of her finest work. You can listen to "razzamatazz" below. For more on Kim Gordon, check out the artist's website . Upcoming tour dates are below the song. August 30 – Vancouver, BC – Commodore Ballroom August 31 – Portland OR – Revolution Hall August 31 - September 1 – Seattle, WA – Bumbershoot 2024 September 27 – Pioneertown, CA – Pappy & Harriet’s September 29 – Dana Point, CA – Ohana Festival October 3 – Tucson, AZ – ...

Kim Gordon - "ECRP"

Image
Photo by Danielle Neu Indie rock legend Kim Gordon continues her foray into experimental electronic music with her latest single. "ECRP" was not included on Gordon's recent album The Collective , but it fits right into the sound of that album. It's filled with aggressive beats, and probably isn't as experimental as I say. "ECRP" is both a surprising direction for Gordon and a sound that makes complete sense. It also helps solidify Gordon as the former member of Sonic Youth that is making the most interesting music post split. Even if this change in sound doesn't work for you, it's still a compelling sound. And if you give it a fair chance, it's going to work for the majority of her Gordon's long term fans. You can watch the Coco Gordon-Moore directed video for "ECRP" below. The song is available as a single via Matador Records. For more on Kim Gordon, check out the artist's website . Upcoming tour dates are below the video. ...

First Listen: New Releases for 8 and 15 March 2024

Image
Artist : Kim Gordon Album : The Collective Quick Thoughts : Someone on Twitter said that Kim won the divorce re: the breakup of Sonic Youth, and it's really really hard not to listen to The Collective and disagree. Someone who turns 71 this year should not be making music this interesting and this far off the beaten trap and making it work. "BYE BYE" is having its moment on social media for sure, but the industrial-esque pseudo-trap feel of this whole package is just stunning both in its scope and its musicality. This isn't going to work for everybody, not that Sonic Youth ever did, but wow, this album. Songs of Note : "BYE BYE," "The Believers," "The Candy House," "Dream Dollar" Artist : Weezy Ford Album : In the Movement Quick Thoughts : Outside of The Barbaras, we haven't heard from either of the Ford sisters in a few years, and Weezy Ford's second full-length album is a really gorgeous slice of retro roots...

Kim Gordon - "Psychedelic Orgasm"

Image
Photo by Danielle Neu Kim Gordon's latest solo single comes closer to what we'd expect from her than some of the latest ones. "Psychedelic Orgasm" is just a burst of what could be too many sounds in other hands. The song is wonderfully dissonant, and just crams the experimental electronic sounds Gordon has been favoring lately with all the noise of the most bananas Sonic Youth songs of all time. There's also some modern pop music Autotune within the song, which I would not have expected at all. Along with the title, there is an abundance of psychedelia within the song. Yes, there's a lot going on with "Psychedelic Orgasm," but isn't that what you want with a song from Kim Gordon? Her best music can be quite challenging, and this one certainly is at times. You can watch the video for "Psychedelic Orgasm" below. The Collective  is out March 8 on Matador Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Kim Gordon, check out the a...
