Last fall we brought you Jean Caffeine's "Mammogram," and now the 70's San Francisco and New York punk legend is back with brand new music. "I Know You Know I Know" sees the Austin resident keeping the spirit of punk if not the rigid auditory structures of the genre. The new song is more alt-folk than punk and is reminding me a lot of artists like The Magnetic Fields. The song is right on the edge of being twee, but instead I'll stick with calling it quirky. There is also some amazing keyboards in this song that are truly its secret weapon. From there she moved to New York City and now resides in Austin. Her latest single, "Mammogram," is a bluesy folk-punk jam with a surprisingly dark edge. It's a slow song, but it saunters along with a menace. The song has a slight Western edge to it, and could kind of work in a Western film, albeit without the lyrics. This cinematic sound makes sense as Caffeine's bass player in Male Order Brides also adds scores to silent films. According to the press release for her latest single, Jean Caffeine is the most famous musician you've never heard of. She was the drummer for Pulsallama when they opened for The Clash, and she also has a cameo in Slacker. Her latest single is "I Don't Want to Kill You Anymore." The song borrows heavily from 1960's girl group/doo wop classics, but with a touch of punk sensibility. The subject matter is obviously not very 60's, and there's some punk rock guitar that pops in every so often with little to no warning. "I Don't Want to Kill You Anymore" is almost criminally catchy and infectious, and has a saccharine quality to it that is offset by the subject matter and biting sense of humor.
