Photo by Halle Jean March Vancouver's Kaleah Lee has a new single out that could blow fans of folk music away. "What Are You So Afraid Of?" is a gorgeous and lush yet stripped down slice of folk-pop. It's barely more than Lee and a guitar (at least at the beginning), but the artist proves she doesn't need much else to make a perfectly captivating single. "What Are You Afraid Of?" is intimate in the best possible way, almost like your best friend is letting you in on a secret they only trust you with. At the end, the song has slowly transformed into almost a dream pop song without losing any of the folk you fell in love with. Kaleah Lee says of her new single: "I’m an anxious person and often catch myself in scenarios where fear is the one thing holding me back. Photo by Donnel Garcia I'm the type of music snob that would typically avoid a musician who became big on TikTok, but something about Kaleah Lee's single "Rotting Fruit" worked for me. With her latest, the Vancouver based artist surpasses her previous single. "Rotting Fruit" was more of a folk leaning pop song, but "The Same" is a folk song with some pop leanings. If anything, "The Same" sounds more like an intimate bedroom recording than a pop song designed for teens to lip sync to. I hesitate to call Lee's latest alt-folk, although I probably would if it was nearly anyone else. Lee just has something intensely compelling that I doubt most music fans are going to be able to resist. You can listen to "The Same" below. "Rotting Fruit" is a pop song with folk roots. Pop music tends to be heavily produced dance music these days, but Lee's new single is much more organic despite being a pop song. It's also very oddly arranged for either folk or pop music, and doesn't quite sound anything like any pop music you can think of.
