Artist : Lucy Dacus Album : Forever is a Feeling Quick Thoughts : We love the whole boygenius Cinematic Universe here, having been on the Lucy Dacus bandwagon as early as "Night Shift." Her third album is her first with a major label, and where it might be a little more ostentatious at times in ways that it doesn't need to be, it more than makes up for it with some of the most brutal and memorable lyrics happening at present. There are so many moments here that just make you mutter curse words under your breath because they hit so hard, and I'm an almost 44-year-old straight married white man. She's something special, and I'm glad the world is getting to know her music more. Songs of Note : "Ankles," "Limerence," "Modigliani," "For Keeps," "Forever is a Feeling," "Best Guess," "Bullseye," "Most Wanted Man" Artist : Gloin Album : All of your anger is actually shame (and I be...

Cat Ridgeway - "What If?"

Image
Photo by Gabe Lugo Orlando's Cat Ridgeway describes her music as "indie rock for overthinkers," which may be why we like it so much. Her latest single, "What If?," is a unique mixture of lo-fi indie rock, alt-pop, and folk. It includes banjo, trumpet, and bari sax to create a killer sound that is both groovy and contemplative. It reminds me of if Beck had tried to make Odelay and One Foot In the Grave into a single album. All of the elements of "What If?" should make the song fun, and while it is, there is also a sense of melancholy within. This is one of those songs that sounds totally fresh while also being familiar. We first discovered Cat Ridgeway back in October with her song "Sprinter," and based on these two singles, she's an artist we're thrilled to hear more from. You can listen to "What If?" below. Sprinter is due out March 28 on CEN/The Orchard, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Cat Ridgeway, check...

Cat Ridgeway - "Epilogue"

Image
Photo by Gabe Lugo The latest from Orlando's Cat Ridgeway is an interesting one. "Epilogue" is one of those songs that is both punk and pop without being pop punk. The guitar in the song has some references to "Lust for Life," but goes off in a more twangy garage rock sound. The song chugs along at a quick pace with Ridgeway's vocals not quite being sung and not quite being spoken. There's a certain frantic feel to the song, and it could be anxiety inducing, but in a good way. "Epilogue" is landing somewhere between proto-punk and modern, pop-inflected punk. Cat Ridgeway is going to have you intrigued and bouncing around whether you want to or not. Cat Ridgeway says of her latest single: “‘Epilogue’ is so striking and gives folks a deeper look into my inner world… it’s the perfect song to introduce this new era. Plus, it’s just fun as hell to play. Distorting and smacking a banjo until your palms bruise is always a good time for everyone involv...
