David Lowery - "I Wrote a Song Called Take the Skinheads Bowling"

Image
Photo by Jason Thrasher You most likely know David Lowery from bands like Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven. Now he's set to release a twenty-eight track solo album that doubles as his musical autobiography. The first single from that album, "I Wrote a Song Called Take the Skinheads Bowling," is about writing the song "Take the Skinheads Bowling" and where Lowery was at the time of his life. Despite being incredibly meta and a truly unique way to release an autobiography, the song is pretty great. Of course, that's not surprising given Lowery's musical pedigree, but it's always a treat when one of your long time favorites releases new music that's both good and interesting. We'll be looking forward to the upcoming album to see what other chapters in his life are put to song. You can listen to "I Wrote a Song Called Take the Skinheads Bowling" below. Fathers, Sons and Brothers is due out May 30 on Cooking Vinyl. For more on David Lowe...

The Chats - "Dine N Dash"

Image
Photo by Matt Walter Australia's The Chats are going to make us all feel old. Really old. First of all, the band formed when the three members were in high school... in 2016. Second, their latest single, "Dine N Dash," is literally about eating in a restaurant and bailing on the check. But it's a gloriously fun, kick ass old school sounding punk song, and not just what would be considered old school to kids in their early 20's. "Dine N Dash" has a snottier than you can imagine late 70's/early 80's punk feel. It's a mixture of Sex Pistols snot and Descendents brattiness. The video clocks in at two minutes and twelve seconds, and the song isn't even playing for that entire time. Yeah, no matter how old this makes you feel, it's pretty great.  You can watch the video for "Dine N Dash" below. High Risk Behaviour , the debut album from The Chats, will be out March 27 on Bargain Bin Records/Cooking Vinyl Australia. You can p...

Isobel Campbell Covers Tom Petty

Image
Photo by Ashley Osbourn We may have had to wait seemingly forever for new music from Isobel Campbell, but along with a new album comes a Tom Petty cover. We're always suckers for cover songs, and personally I'll always check out a Tom Petty cover. Campbell chose to take on Petty's beyond iconic "Runnin' Down a Dream." As you would imagine, Campbell's cover is quite different from the original. There is some of the same iconic guitar riff, but it's a very, very minimal use of guitar, instead focusing mostly on what sounds like a drum machine and Campbell's vocals. It's like a quiet electroclash take on Tom Petty. Campbell says of the song:  “I grew up listening to Full Moon Fever in my Dad's car. On repeat. I had no idea what it was back then, just knew that I loved hearing it. The lilting laidback voice floating from the speakers made absolute sense to me. It painted a picture of America and the West long before I’d ever go. I’d visua...

Isobel Campbell - "Ant Life"

Image
Photo by Ashley Osbourn If it feels like it's been a while since we've heard from Isobel Campbell, it's because it has been. Her last album was 2010's Hawk  with Mark Lanegan. Since then she moved to Los Angeles from Glasgow and got married. She started working on her new album, but then her label went under which led to years of legal hassle to get the rights to her album back. Luckily, that's all been settled so we can finally hear the long awaited album. "Ant Life" is pretty much what we'd expect from the former founder of Belle & Sebastian. It's not really twee, but it's a dreamy indie pop song. It's folk-pop with synths, creating an almost magical, dreamlike sound. You can watch the video for "Ant Life" below. There is No Other , the new album from Isobel Campbell, will be out January 31 on Cooking Vinyl. You can pre-order the album here . For more on Isobel Campbell, check out her website .
