If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Georgia Smith So far we've brought you two songs from Chicago's Aunt Kelly: "Billboard Lady" and "Nurturing." While both are power pop songs, "Nurturing" was more alt-rock and "Billboard Lady" was more piano based pop that sounded like it could have been from musical theater. "Worse For You" is right in the middle. It's definitely a piano driven power pop song, but there is enough guitar to keep it still an alt-rocker. That being said, "Worse For You" is an upbeat pop song that is propelled by Kelly Hannemann's charm. Of course, with any upbeat pop-ish song that I like, the song's subject matter isn't quite as cheery as it sounds. The song is about living with bipolar disorder and how that impacts those around you. You can watch the video for "Worse For You" below. Remember is due out June 10. With their latest, "Nurturing," they're ramping up the rock without losing any of the pop hooks. While this new song might be a little heavier, it's still insanely catchy. The previous one reminded me of Ben Folds, but this one is more reminiscent of mid 90's alt-power pop bands. This is making me think of the pop side of Letters to Cleo with the ramshackle feel of The Gits. This song is a lot of fun, and has us even more excited about Aunt Kelly's musical range! Kelly Hannemann says of her band's new song: “I was in my first serious long-term relationship, and I think a lot of people have this idea before they get into a serious relationship, that they’re going to be so good at it and be an ideal partner. Photo by Georgia Smith Aunt Kelly is the musical project of Chicago's Kelly Hanneman. Their new single, "Billboard Lady," is a charming and infectious power pop song that is heavy on piano. It's an impossibly upbeat love song that's an ode to Aunt Kelly's drummer Sarah Weddle. It's a huge song that could fit quite well in a stadium, and even sounds like it could come straight out of a (really cool) musical. It's the kind of indie rock meets piano pop sound that you hear in Ben Folds' best songs.  Kelly Hanneman says of the songs on her band's upcoming album, which were started in 2019: “Sometimes when you release something so long after you record it, you’re sick of the songs by the time they’re out.
