Arrows of Athena - "Comets"

Image
Photo by Karla Lopresti For their latest single, Arrows of Athena have drawn inspiration from French wine and champagne pioneer Madame Clicquot. "Comets" sees the Boston band firmly in their 90's alt-rock meets electronic music sound. If you remember bands like Garbage and Republica, you know this sound quite well. It's a dance-friendly rock song bordering on dance music. From the opening hypnotic guitar riff, you're going to be completely won over by "Comets." It's glossy and gritty at the same time, and has an impeccable groove. Arrows of Athena have created a fun dance-friendly song that feels smart and tells a story in a way that fully transplants you into its world. Jac-Lyn Gibson (vocals, visuals, storytelling) says of the band's latest single: “It’s said that comets crashed into the vineyard one evening and, although everyone was convinced the grapes were no longer usable, she was certain it would help with the flavor of the wine. After ma...

Arrows of Athena - "Abandoned Love"

Image
Photo by Karla Lopresti Boston's Arrows of Athena is back with a new single to follow up their 2024 debut album The Ghost Archives. " Abandoned Love" is an electronic rocker with giant beats that borders on being purely a dance song, but has too much of a rock vibe to be anything but. This one has a distinctly late 90's sound to it, hearkening back to the days when artists like Garbage and Republica began breaking downs the walls between electronic dance music and alt-rock. "Abandoned Love" has a killer groove and is perfect for dancing or pumping your fist, or perhaps both. There's something about Arrows of Athena's latest that sounds truly cool, and it only gets cooler and cooler with every listen. Jac-Lyn Gibson says of her band's latest single: “The concept  of  our busy lives and [a husband and wife] coming home to one another at the end  of  the day just spilled out  of  me. I think it’s a great testament to how love, although sometimes aba...

First Listen: New Releases for 26 April 2024

Artist : Joh Chase Album : Solo Quick Thoughts : Joh Chase has gotten some worthwhile attention in this place as of late, with "Avalanche" a certified killer track, and I'm happy to inform you that their whole album is absolutely stellar. "Gone" and "TV of Your Mind" are both in constant rotation in my head, and this roots-esque singer-songwriter effort is not one to be missed. A mandatory listen this week. Songs of Note : "Gone," "Avalanche," "When I Got This Place," "TV of Your Mind," "Smoother," "To Forget You" Artist : Willson Williams Album : Willson Williams Quick Thoughts : The duo of Kathryn Williams and Dan Willson (aka Withered Hand) come together with a record very much in the folk tradition, but with a little more polish and feeling than a lot of other albums like it. I found myself going back to a lot of songs here over the weekend, and it's a really solid listen tha...

Arrows of Athena - "Reckless Heart"

Image
Photo by Karla Lopresti Something about Arrows of Athena just sounds like they're from Boston. The band started as a pandemic project of Scott Lerner and Jac-Lyn Gibson and just released a new single, "Reckless Heart." The song specifically sounds like late 90's Boston as the alt-rock scene started to edge its way into the world of pop, although we never would have admitted that back then. To me it sounds like if Letters to Cleo's Go! had gone a little deeper into the world of pop music. "Reckless Heart" still has a harder, almost industrial edge to a guitar than pop music would typically have, and it's this dichotomy of sounds that makes Arrows of Athena such an intriguing band. Jac-Lyn Gibson says of her band's latest single: “‘Reckless Heart’ is just the kind of song that no matter what genre you’re into, it just pulls you in right from the beginning. It has some rock, a little pop, and I’m obsessed with the overall ‘90s throwback sound of it....
