Linying - "Blondie"

Image
Photo by Michelle Mei Los Angeles-via-Singapore artist Linying has a new single out that revels in the space between pop and indie rock. "Blondie" leans much more heavily into the world of pop music, with just enough of an indie rock edge and uniqueness to keep the music snobs enraptured. It's an upbeat song that you're going to need to dance around to. It includes some of the most interesting and thrilling instrumental flourishes throughout that make "Blondie" undeniably great. It's kind of like if Taylor Swift jammed with boygenius after all of them obsessively listened to Neutral Milk Hotel. Even as someone who typically shies away from pop music, Linying's latest is a phenomenal song. Linying says of her latest single: “It’s about a beautiful, idyllic day I spent swimming in a lagoon with someone I’d just met.  I felt so happy and light, but at the same time there was a part of me that kept thinking, ‘I’m not actually this light. You don’t know w...

Soraia Covers Blondie

Image
Photo by Cassandra Panek It feels like it's been a while since we brought you a cover song, so we can't pass up the latest single from Soraia. The Philadelphia rockers just released their version of "Union City Blue," which is a song I didn't recognize by name but instantly recognized as soon as it started. I've been a huge fan of their high intensity garage rock for a few years now, and this shows off another side of the band. Their version of "Union City Blue" stays intensely true to the original, just a little louder and and with slicker/more modern production. If you're unfamiliar with the fantastic sound of Soraia, this new single will have you delving deep into their back catalog. Frontwoman ZouZou Mansour says of the band's latest single: "I've wanted to cover 'Union City Blue' since I first heard it on the 'Sid and Nancy' soundtrack album I bought back in 2016. I loved that movie--starring Gary Oldman and Chlo...

The Surfrajettes Cover Blondie

Image
We first discovered The Surfrajettes, "Toronto's premiere psychedelic instrumental surfing group," back in October with their cover of The Lancasters' Halloween classic "Satan's Holiday." Now they're back with another cover song. This time they take on Blondie's immortal "Heart of Glass." Yes, it's an instrumental surf rock cover, and yes, it's phenomenal. They take Blondie's 1978 disco/punk classic and make it sound even more vintage. This time it's a laid back groovy 1960's classic. And despite there being no lyrics, it's impossible not to recognize this one as "Heart of Glass." It's an absurdly fun cover of one of the greatest songs of all time. You can listen to The Surfrajettes' cover of "Heart of Glass" below. Roller Fink is due out April 22 and can be pre-ordered over at Bandcamp . Twisted Pine Covers Blondie

Image
Americana (particularly bluegrass) covers of punk/new wave songs are pretty cliche, but sometimes a band just completely nails one. Boston's Twisted Pine are releasing an all covers EP on Friday, and one of those songs is Blondie's beyond classic "Heart of Glass." The Blondie original might be one of the most perfect songs of all time, but Twisted Pine rise to the challenge and make "Heart of Glass" their own. The song is instantly recognizable once the vocals kick in, and they take very few liberties with the melody. Instrumentally, it's obviously going to be a much more stripped down version, but you'll definitely recognize it. As someone that loves cover songs, this might be one of the best I've heard in years. You can listen to Twisted Pine's version of "Heart of Glass" below. Dreams , the covers EP from Twisted Pine, will be out June 8 on Signature Sounds. It will also feature covers of classics by The Cranberries, Scissor ...
