I've been a fan of Diablogato for a while now. Something about their mix of punk and rockabilly without being fully rockabilly works perfectly for me. So we're obviously thrilled to get a new EP from the Boston band. Snake Oil Salvation is six songs of pure power Americana infused punk rock. A song like "Fire and Powder" might be the most hyped up we've ever heard these guys. There's also a hint of metal in this collection of songs that we haven't heard previously. "July 1969" could be the standout song on the EP, with it's oddly Americana leaning sound that could draw some modern folk fans into the fold... as long as they're ok with a sound this rough. Snake Oil Salvation is filled with dark and gritty songs perfect as we head into the most intense and dread filled election week we'll (hopefully) ever face. Photo by Pat Piasecki I've been a fan of Diablogato since seeing the Boston rockers play a killer triple bill with Salem Wolves and The Devil's Twins all the way back in 2019. Their sound has evolved since then, but it remains straight up rock and roll heavily inspired by punk and with a touch of rockabilly. Their latest single, "Lost Highway," shows the band at their darkest while still being a fun rock song. This is a heavy version of classic rock and roll and blues, sounding both familiar and completely fresh. As with Diablogato's best songs, "Lost Highway" comes at you full speed without relenting. Any quiet moment is filled with an ominous sense of dread, and it's almost a relief when the volume cranks back up. As small venues are disappearing in and around Boston, craft breweries are starting to fill that void and booking shows with local and touring artists. The Boston band have had this great blend of punk mixed with early rock 'n' roll with some rockabilly thrown in that I simply can't resist. Their latest single, "Jet Black Night," changes up their sound a little, but also a lot at the same time. Gone are even the hints of rockabilly. Instead, Diablogato have added a heavy blues rock sound to "Jet Black Night." This is just pure loud and heavy rock with some blues swagger. It has that grime that early Black Keys records have and garage blues seems to be missing these days. The band seems to be moving away from the punk/rockabilly sound, but they're still keeping that dark edge that defines Diablogato's sound. Four hundred thirty seven days. That's a long time to go without seeing live music, especially when you've been going to one to four (or sometimes more) shows per month for twenty (or more) years. But that's how long it had been since I had seen Against Me! in Holyoke, MA on March 11 before everything shut down. But, shows are starting up, and since I'm fully vaxxed I decided to make my very first show back this past Saturday with Diablogato and The Devil's Twins. The Devil's Twins played a shorter acoustic duo set to start off the night. Obviously it wasn't quite as rockin' given it was just them and an acoustic guitar, but I don't think anyone really cared. The crowd treated The Devil's Twins like they were The Beatles at Shea Stadium. The pure joy felt between the band and the crowd was palpable in the air. I'm not sure if it was the reception or just the joy of getting to play music for a crowd again, but Nicole Coogan needed a few second...

Photo by Pat Piasecki We don't typically post about a band releasing a video for a song on an album that was released last year, but every now and then we have to make an exception. Diablogato released Old Scratch way back in 2019, and was one of my favorite EPs of that year. A stand out track from that release was "Blasphemy," which now has a brand new video. It's a throwback to when videos would actually get airplay and a single hit video could make a band's entire career. "Blasphemy" is the type of song that is rooted in rockabilly, but just rocks too hard to quite be that genre. It's just straight up loud rock 'n' roll deeply rooted in early rock music, but still a modern song with a punk edge. You can watch the video for "Blasphemy" below. Photo by Pat Piasecki We first discovered Diablogato back in February when I made the trip up to Salem, MA for their show with Salem Wolves and The Devil's Twins. They have new music coming up next month, and today we can check out "Lipstick & Cyanide." The new song is exactly what I'd expect from Diablogato based on their live show. It's a garage rock/punk hybrid that hints at rockabilly without really going into it full throttle. "Lipstick & Cyanide" may be a mid-tempo song, but it's a full on rocker. The only surprising element to the song is just how hard it grooves . That was a pleasant surprise. You can listen to "Lipstick & Cyanide" below. Saturday night was an absurdly packed night for live music in the Boston area. Of all the options available, I had to trek way out to Salem, MA for a fantastic loud and local triple bill: The Devil's Twins, Diablogato, and Salem Wolves. Considering how long I've been writing about Salem Wolves on here, and considering that they're a local band that plays in the area a lot, this was somehow the first time I had gotten around to seeing them live. It definitely won't be the last. Their arena ready garage rock anthems are crafted specifically for a live show, even if the "arena" is a tiny brick walled basement. The band was breaking in two brand new members (guitarist Charlie MacSteven (who also plays in Diablogato) and bassist Cat Verlicco), but you would never have known it. They played insanely tightly, and with an incredible infectious energy. Singer Gray Bouchard is a much more theatrical frontman than I expected. We're not talking about an Alice Coop...
