Anareta - "Black Snake"

Image
Our favorite orchestral doom metal band out of New Orleans is back with a new single. On "Black Snake," Anareta is not messing around. It just blasts with the heaviness as soon as the song starts. It's a screamy and thrashy masterpiece, and then the noise retreats and leaves just the strings. "Black Snake" then turns into this gorgeous, lush, and stripped down nearly classical piece of just strings and music. This goes on for much longer than expected, and the metal only slowly moves back in. But move back in it does, and with an absolute vengeance. "Black Snake" is the rare eleven minute metal song that will have you desiring more. Anareta says of their new song: "'Black Snake' is a recognition of the horrific and destructive forces of the oil industry and the commercial infrastructures that are imposed on our lands and across our waterways. The title stems from a Lakota prophecy of a black snake that would cross the land causing destruct...

Anareta - "Unforgiving Sun"

Image
Chamber metal might not be a genre you'd associate with If It's Too Loud..., when Anareta do it, it just works for us. The New Orleans based band recently released a new single, "Unforgiving Sun," that is undeniably theatrical. In my experience, strings being included in a metal song tend to be more of a novelty. With Anareta, it somehow adds to the heaviness of the song, and this song is plenty heavy without them. Of course, with "Unforgiving Sun," you can't imagine the song without them. It's just such an integral part of the song. Anareta have made a song perfect for all metalheads, and the pure creativity is going to suck in even those who aren't. The band says of their new single: "' Unforgiving Sun'  is inspired by the interminable summers of New Orleans; the air thickens, tourism slows to a trickle, storefronts shutter. The sun-soaked blacktop radiates heat long past dusk's false promise of respite. As this song opens we l...

Anareta - "Locality"

Image
We've all heard metal with strings before, but no one is doing it quite like Anareta. The New Orleans based band are combining classical music with intense metal for a sound called chamber-metal. "Locality" shows off their sound perfectly. While a lot of metal with strings can kind of sound like a novelty, Anareta doesn't feel that way. The strings accentuate the force of the song that would be a brutal and killer track even without the strings included. As with a lot of music that we cover, "Locality" won't be for everyone, but if it works for you this is going to hit you hard and attach itself to your soul. Anareta says of the song: "' Locality'  was the first song to coalesce when we began crafting our sound in early 2018, so it feels exciting and appropriate that it is also the first single announcing the release of our debut album  Fear Not .  Through an evolving collaborative process, we combined our musical tastes to produce a sound b...
