If It's Too Loud...

Photo by Laura-Lynn Petrick Cat Clyde is known as a Canadian indie-folk artist, but her latest single is distinctly not traditionally folk. "Papa Took My Totems" is rooted in more of a rock sound than folk. Clyde's vocals more soul than folk, there are some great early garage rock keyboards, and the song just straight up rocks. Despite the rock roots of the song, Clyde injects a certain groove into the song that goes well beyond straight up rock. The theme of 2023 seems to be music that borrows from multiple genres, and "Papa Took My Totems" is a perfect example of that. It's a great working of folk, rock, soul, indie rock, and garage rock. This is a special song you're going to want to put on repeat for a while. We loved the modern roots meets early rock and roll/doo wop sound and compared it to Pony Hunt and Hurray for the Riff Raff. For Clyde's newest single, she strips down her sound to the bare elements. It's mostly just Clyde's voice and piano with some strings or other instrumentation. Being so bare bones, you would assume it would be a pretty straightforward singer/songwriter or folk song, but "I Feel It" isn't exactly your average straightforward song. While it may be at parts, it meanders into a more alt-folk song throughout with odd instrumentation or what sound like loops popping in here and there. Photo by Strummer Jasson If you follow us for our folkier side, you're going to love the latest from Cat Clyde. The Canadian singer/songwriter isn't quite folk, but makes music that is folk adjacent. The press release for her latest single, "Mystic Light," refers to her music as "nature punk" and compares her to Hurray for the Riff Raff. That comparison is apt, but I'm also hearing a lot of other artists like Pony Hunt, Faye Webster, and early Molly Burch. This is modern roots music mixed with early rock and roll/doo wop. A lot of that is how much twang is in the song, from the guitar to Clyde's voice. Her voice has this great quality that leans into its twang but still has this smooth crooner's quality to it.
