La Sécurité - "Anyway"

Image
Photo by Aabid Youssef Every now and then I make the mistake of reading too much of a press release before listening to a song, and I did that with "Anyway" from  La   Sécurité . The new song from the Montreal art punk band is compared to a mixture of The B-52s and Yeah Yeah Yeahs... and that pretty much nails it. "Anyway" has all of the exuberance of a classic B-52s track mixed with a more modern sound (and some of the darkness of) Yeah Yeah Yeahs. There is a ton of New Wave/post punk groove in this song, and it's the perfect example of a sad song that you're still going to want to dance to, either in spite of or because of the mood. Singer  Éliane Viens-Synnott  says of her band's new song: “This song was written in the early stages of dealing with grief related to miscarriage and pleads a sort of surrender to the strain it can put on a couple processing it.”   You can watch the video for "Anyway" below. Stay Safe! is due out June 16 on Mothl...

Primetime - "Anyway"

Primetime's "Anyway" is one of the more interesting songs I've heard in a while. It runs about 1/2 a step slower than it feels like it should based on the intensity. It sounds like they're trying to be a poppier (and British) Sleater-Kinney, even though it's more discordant than Sleater-Kinney have been in multiple albums. It's one of those increasingly rare songs that isn't trying to reinvent music or punk, but uses pre-existing elements in a way that is incredibly fresh. It makes even us old guys realize that we recognize all the pieces but have no idea how Primetime is assembling them. And before we get a chance to figure it out, the song just kind of ends after less than two minutes. You can listen to "Anyway" below. To keep tabs on Primetime, follow them on Facebook , Twitter , and their Bandcamp .
