Ginger Winn - "Escape"

Image
Image by Brooklyn Zeh Kingston, NY based and originally from Charleston, SC, Ginger Winn has a new single out. "Escape" is a raw and painful folk track, although the song does have some fairly huge moments and is mostly uplifting. It has an ability to straddle the line between folk-pop and indie folk in how accessible yet unique it is. The song also leans much more into the world of modern folk than a traditional style, and ends in a crescendo that is much more in the vein of pop music. "Escape" is a personal and epic song that is going to have some huge crossover appeal to folk fans of many styles. Ginger Winn says of her latest single: " It’s about running—and trying to escape your own mind and thoughts, which is very hard to do. There’s a double meaning when I say ‘except me / accept me.’ Not only does the song mean ‘there’s nothing to fear except the fear of me,’ but it’s also a plea—as you hear the vocals crying out, ‘accept me.’ Social anxiety in an empty...

Destroy Boys - "Escape"

Image
Northern California's Destroy Boys are giving us another sample of their upcoming album before it's out next week. "Escape" is the kind of song that the crusty middle aged dude in me hates calling punk, although it is. Sure, "Escape" is quite poppy but still has just enough edge and crunch to it to keep it from being pure pop. That being said, this is such a poppy song. It's the level of pop that usually turns me off, but when a song is this great it's impossible not to love. Maybe it's the oddly 90's slacker vibe you can hear throughout, especially in the vocals. Not many bands can combine punk, 90's indie rock, and pop in a way that is this compelling, but Destroy Boys pull it off. Plus, there's a spoken part in the middle that sounds like it's a phone call which is making me oddly nostalgic for the late 80's. Frontperson Alexia Roditis says of the new song: “‘Escape’  is about wanting an out from the regular life I was livi...

Silent Attic - "Hide Away"

Image
Germany's Silent Attic list The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys as influences, and you definitely hear that on their latest single "Hide Away." It's a huge indie rock song that throws back to the early 2000s during the last great rock revival (which makes us feel ancient). It's filled with rough, catchy vocals, giant guitar hooks, and more groove than you can handle. It's possibly more on the mainstream/pop side of things than I normally write about, but Silent Attic are one of those bands you're going to want to know about now. You can watch the video for "Hide Away" below. Escape , the upcoming EP from Silent Attic, will be out October 2. For more on Silent Attic, check out their website .
