If It's Too Loud...

Producer Real Bad Man has become a leader of collaborations as of late, releasing collaborative albums with Boldy James, Pink Siifu, and Kool Keith. His latest is with Blu. I couldn't say that the duo's new single, "Aladdin," is an old school hip hop song, but it's not not old school. Blu's flow sounds innately like classic hip hop, but Real Bad Man's production isn't quite classic. Instead, it seems to borrow from the early 90's more edgy pure hip hop period, the late 90's when R&B started to poke in, and a more modern style. "Aladdin" has an oddly timeless quality, which is not something you typically get in hip hop. You can watch the visualizer for "Aladdin" below. Bad News  is due out September 1. For the latest single from Marlowe (the musical collaboration between producer L'Orange and rapper Solemn Brigham), the dup brought in Blu and Joell Ortiz fora couple of verses. "Royal" is the perfect showcase for all three MCs. Each one gets to shine on their verse with a perfect, high energy backing track from L'Orange. With a ton of sampled horns, "Royal" has all the energy of a brass band but more rooted in hip hop than those collaborations usually go. If you weren't already excited about an upcoming album from Marlowe, this one will win you over. L'Orange says of the new song: “This one I wanted to get out of the way of the rappers and let them do what they do best.” You can listen to "Royal" below. Photo courtesy Damu the Fudgemunk For the second single off Damu the Fudgemunk's KPM Crate Diggers series, which seems him working with KPM's extensive archive of records, the producer brings in Blu. "God Speed" is the result, and it's truly a unique blend of hip hop. KPM's archive isn't limited to the genres hip hop typically samples, and "God Speed" uses mostly samples of string and wind instruments and beats that could be from a jazz, marching band, and some other type of record. The song is surprisingly stark, and while it's hip hop, it's such a unique version of hip hop. While most releases in the genre tend to get repetitive and follow a tried and true formula, Damu the Fudgemunk is giving us some of the most intriguing sounds we've heard in a long time.
