Anna Burch - "Not So Bad"

Image
Photo by Chloe Sells We loved Anna Burch's 2018 album Quit the Curse  and it's somehow kinda feels like the 90's singer/songwriter sound. She's now back with a new song, "Not So Bad." If you liked Quit the Curse , you're going to like this one. It has that folk-adjacent 90's feel to it that you can't quite put your finger on. It still reminds me of Liz Phair again, but Burch is definitely moving into her own direction. Plus, the speak singing sounds like an almost folk Pavement, which I'm always going to be on board for. You can watch the video for "Not So Bad" below (it also might be one of my favorite videos this century). If You're Dreaming , the upcoming album from Anna Burch, will be out April 3 on Polyvinyl. You can pre-order a copy here . For more on Anna Burch, check out her website .

First Listen: New Releases for 2 February

An interesting new release week... Album of the Week : Artist : Sunny War Album : With the Sun Quick Description : Lovely, edgy folk music. Why You Should Listen : You wish Cold Specks's album from last year was more like her earlier ones. Overall Thoughts : On initial listen for this, I was surprised at how the vocal quality and delivery reminded me of Erin McKeown, but the stark nature of a lot of the music also gave me a lot of thoughts to the earlier Cold Sparks albums. This is a really gorgeous folk album with some light strings, great harmonies, subtle guitar work, the whole thing. This might have legs, so here’s hoping this is a breakthrough effort that gets the attention it deserves. Recommendation : A must-listen this week. Artist : Bat Fangs Album : Bat Fangs Quick Description : A side project of sorts that is as fun as it is aggressive. Why You Should Listen : You like your guitar rock with every distortion pedal turned up. Overall Thoughts : A compress...

Anna Burch - "Tea-Soaked Letter"

Image
Photo by Elene Usdin We just keep getting more and more excited for the upcoming debut album from Detroit's Anna Burch. Her latest single from it, "Tea-Soaked Letter," is a bit more pop leaning than "Asking 4 a Friend," but in the best possible way. It's pop in the way mid-90's alternative bands were pop. The guitar is a sun soaked haze of just enough fuzz, but the real star of the track is Burch's vocals. She doesn't have a traditionally beautiful voice, instead it's interesting along the lines of Liz Phair and Juliana Hatfield. "Tea-Soaked Letter" is a perfect nugget of alternative pop perfection. You can watch the video for "Tea-Soaked Letter" below. Anna Burch's debut album, Quit the Curse , will be out March 2 on Polyvinyl. You can pr-order a copy here . Anna Burch - "Asking 4 a Friend"

Photo by Ambar Navarro I usually have the "no using '4' for 'for' unless you're Prince" rule, but I'll give Anna Burch a pass on this one. Hailing from Detroit, Anna Burch's new single, "Asking 4 a Friend," will probably get her lumped into the neo-folk category, and while fans of that genre will end up liking this song, it's far from folk. Instead, the song is laid back yet still somehow quietly intense 90's infused indie rock. It reminds me of Juliana Hatfield going just a tiny bit country while fronting a Pavement that have decided to lose the adjective "quirky." Yeah, it's a pretty great song. You can listen to "Asking 4 a Friend" below. Anna Burch's debut solo album will be out in early 2018 on Polyvinyl. For more on Anna Burch, check her out on Facebook and Twitter .
