With "Stonewall," they're going back to indie rock in a serious way. "Stonewall" sounds extremely lo-fi, to a great effect. It feels intensely personal and more of a bedroom recording than we would have expected from the previous singles from Constellations. There is this ongoing noise behind the entire song, and then the feedback and distortion from the instruments. "Stonewall" is an intense song that we can't recommend enough. It's their first since frontperson Diane Jean came out as queer and gender-nonconforming, and it's also reflecting a change in sound for the band. With their latest single, "Saturn," gone is the Tom Petty style Americana meets indie rock. The new song reflects a more pop oriented sound, although one that's heavily filtered through their indie rock roots. It starts off relatively poppy and smooth, but as it goes on the guitars start getting fuzzier and noisier. As many of our indie rock favorites go further and further into the world of pop, it's great to see a band keep one foot squarely in that world while exploring their pop side. Photo by Kay Dargin It's been a while since we've brought you new music from Burlington, VT's Clever Girls, but luckily they're coming up with a new album which means we have a new single from the band! Previously I've described their music as Tom Petty Americana meets indie rock, but their new single "Baby Blue" doesn't have a shred of that sound. Instead, the new single is a quiet, mellow, dreamy indie rock song. It's a slightly swirling, restrained song that bubbles with emotion. There is a slight crescendo that brings Clever Girls back to their indie rock roots, but "Baby Blue" shows a new side that almost sounds electronic, focusing on front-person Diane Jean's vocals.
