Night Court - "D List"

Image
Vancouver's Night Court are quickly becoming our fast and short punk meets power pop songs. Their latest fits into that description perfectly, but "D List" may be their most punk song yet. It barrels straight through you with buzzy guitars and a chorus that shouldn't be as catchy as it is. Punk this fast and aggressive shouldn't be this catchy or fun, but once you hear "D List" you'll wonder why. On this latest single, Night Court sound like you strapped a rocket to the Ramones. Even the most strict punk purist won't find anything to complain about with "D List." You can watch the video for "D List" below. $hit Machine is due out November 1 on Recess Records, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp . Night Court - "Captain Caveperson"

Image
Vancouver's Night Court have a new short and sweet single in their fantastic DIY punk meets power pop sound. "Captain Caveperson" clocks in at just over a minute long of catchy, poppy greatness. The song sounds as if Guided By Voices were huge fans of The Archies, and had formed as a garage band in the 1970's. Night Court songs have always been absurdly fun, and "Captain Caveperson" is especially so. Normally we'd say that our only complaint is that the brevity of the track left us wanting to hear more, but this one is the perfect length for the song. Night Court have packed a whole lot into sixty-six seconds. Jiffy says of the band's latest single: "A lot of the lyrics I write are about how fucked up the world is and how depressed it makes me but/so for this one I wanted to inject a bit of positivity and self affirmation theory into them. In my job, like lots of jobs, I have to fix things sometimes and no matter how big or small the issue is, t...

Night Court - "Mistakes Become You"

Image
Vancouver's Night Court started out as friends emailing each other song ideas during lockdown, and has blossomed into a full blown project. Their latest single, "Mistakes Become You," expands on 2022's Nervous Birds Too . The new song is under two minutes, but has a scope far greater than its length. It's a bouncy mini-epic, and has that lo-fi punchy indie rock sound of an artist like Guided By Voices but the giant harmonies of The Polyphonic Spree. The song is an absolute joy to listen to, and I'd wish it were longer, but that wouldn't be the Night Court way. You can listen to "Mistakes Become You" below. $hit Machine is due out November 1 on Recess Records, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp . Night Court - "Brighten the Corner"

Image
The first thing you're going to think of when you hear the new single from Night Court is Pavement. "Brighten the Corner" obviously will make you think of Pavement's 1997 album Brighten the Corners. Night Court also have a little bit of a 90's indie rock vibe on this latest song. There may be some Pavement similarities, but the title is going to be the strongest. This new song is much too upbeat to be anything that came out of the cynical 90's indie scene. If anything it's like The Polyphonic Spree goes 90's indie rock, and who doesn't want that? Guitarist/vocalist Dave Patterson says of the new song: "The song reflects on the idea that individuals can make the world at large a better place by improving their own small corner of it." You can watch the video for "Brighten the Corner" below. Nervous Birds Too is due out May 6 on Snappy Little Numbers and Debt Offensive Records, and can be pre-ordered here . Night Court - "Titanic"

Image
Night Court started back in 2020 when friends Jiffy and Dave started emailing each other song ideas during lockdown. They began recording on a four track, and once they added Emilor on drums Night Court was fully formed. "Titanic" is a one minute 16 second song that is unbelievably catchy indie rock jam (with some punk edge) with abrasive yet endearing guitars. It's a wonderfully messy song that never quite gets too messy and keeps enough pop hooks to have you desperate for more. It's the rare just over one minute song that ends up being the absolute perfect length. Dave Paterson says of the band's new song: “The original idea was for the song to be about the titanic without any explicit reference to the name ‘titanic’ – a real one minute, 15 second mystery – but then we somehow ended up just naming the song “titanic” and thought that was stupid and funny so we went with it. This has the added benefit of ensuring it isn’t confused with the Edmund Fitzgerald or the...
