Megan Airlie - "Mother Whale"

Image
We've been loving this stream of singles being released by Scotland's Megan Airlie. While each song fits into this little sound she's crafted for herself, each single has its own sound. "Mother Whale" is the latest, and it is somehow both her most mainstream and quirkiest song yet. Her jazzy side is showcased the most (so far) in the new song, but there is also a stronger soul sound present. She also has an almost minimalist sensibility, which doesn't usually fit jazz or soul. Instead the focus is on vocals, both Airlie's and backing. It gives the song a slight folk feel. "Mother Whale" is both unique and familiar. You can listen to "Mother Whale" below. The song is available now on Bandcamp via Bloc Music Records . For more on Megan Airlie, be sure to check out her website .

Megan Airlie - "Honey"

Image
We last heard from Scotland's Megan Airlie back in February and we're thrilled that we finally have a follow up to "After River." Her latest single, "Honey," isn't quite as bare bones as "After River" is. It's still sparse compared to most songs, but "Honey" has more of a full band sound. The increased instrumentation gives the song a much more lush feeling. It adds to the blues/jazz sound that Airlie started hinting at with her previous song. There is a distinct early Lady Lamb meets Lake Street Dive sound. Plus, we still have her voice which somehow stands out even more with the extra instrumentation.  You can listen to "Honey" below. The song is available now as a single on  Bandcamp  via Bloc Music Recordings. For more on Megan Airlie, check out her Facebook and website .

Megan Airlie - "After River"

The debut single from Scotland's Megan Airlie is truly something special. "After River" meets somewhere between traditional and alt folk. It reminds me of Lady Lamb's early more bare bones work (or her Tender Warriors Club EP) but mixed with a little jazz/soul. Her voice is truly the focus of the song. Airlie says of the song: " It was birthed from one of the hardest times of my life and was the first song I had written in a year. I had been in hospital, arrested and dumped and I thought to myself what best to do other than sing?" You can listen to "After River" below. The single is available for free via Megan Airlie's Bandcamp on Bloc Music Records. For more on Megan Airlie, check out her Facebook  and website .
