If It's Too Loud...

Linnea's Garden, Boston's favorite "punk rock you can dance to" band, is back with a brand new EP. Get Heard shows an evolution and a step forward for the band. It starts off with "Sell Yr Love," a more contemplative and mellow song than we're used to from Linnea's Garden. It reminds me of some of Kim Gordon's more quiet Sonic Youth songs, but maybe more in vibe than sound. "Grrrl On Guitar" is chock full of references to other bands and songs, and it's kind of fun to try to catch them all... when you're not just rocking out and enjoying the song. "Stop Codon" is a killer and fun rock song, and "Her," the EP's closer, brings back the more laid back and melodic vibe while still being full of power and kick. Linnea's Garden make punk rock you can dance to. The Boston trio's latest single, "Stop Codon," has disjointed guitar and an irresistible beat. One thing that always strikes me about their music is that it's undeniably punk, but it's also fun dance music. It's also catchy and poppy without being what you'd consider pop punk. This is high energy music to bop along to, and it kind of resides in the world between Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. "Stop Codon" is a song that is effortlessly cool because of how little Linnea's Garden are trying to be cool. It's just laying out how they feel and dancing their emotions out. I don't personally cover very many remixes, but there are always exceptions. Last year, Linnea's Garden released the excellent "Chaotic Bisexual Summer," a party ready rock song about having a chaotic bisexual summer. This year they've joined forces with Temp Rec for "Chaotic Bisexual Summer (Chaos Mix)," a complete reworking of the song. This one is a pure dance song that is reminding me a lot of going to clubs in the late 90's in the wake of Trainspotting. Sometimes you just want to dance, and Linnea's Garden and Temp Rec are here for that. In a press release Linnea's Garden say of their latest single: "Coming out isn't something you do one time. Linnea's Garden have always been a fun band. Even at their most political and punk sounding, their songs have a sense of joy and just make you want to party. Their latest single, "210," might be their most fun yet. The song is as bouncy as a mid-tempo rocker can be, and even adds in some ska-esque guitar. It dances along the border of the worlds of punk/rock and pop in the way that only Linnea's Garden can. "210" is a fuzz-filled rock song that is almost impossibly catchy and infectious. Just as the weather starts to get a little too cold up here in New England, Linnea's Garden release yet another song that is perfect for the summer. You can watch the video for "210" below. Boston's Linnea's Garden have always landed in the spectrum of punk, but "No Vision" might just be the trio's most punk song yet. The song is still dance friendly, which is required for any Linnea's Garden song, but "No Vision" has an unexpected edge to it. The song has an extra layer of fuzz and crunch to the guitar, which adds a certain angst to the song. Plus, the guitar solo is absolutely killer and will inspire some serious headbanging at live shows. All that said, this is still a Linnea's Garden jam, so it's a seriously fun song. This is the type of song that makes me long for local rock radio stations, because this is on of those tracks that should end up being a local hit. You can watch the video for "No Vision" below. Linnea's Garden are one of the best indie rock party bands in Boston. Their latest single, "Cherry," is a little bit more laid back than what we usually hear from the trio, but it's still party ready. According to the YouTube description of the video, "It's a happy song, inspired by Miami beaches and nightclubs." While we previously declared their last single, "Chaotic Bisexual Summer," to be the song of the summer, "Cherry" is the perfect follow up for the dog days of summer. We're all a little burned out by the heat and humidity and are starting to look forward to the fall, but we need to try to get as much out of the last month of the season as we can. "Chaotic Bisexual Summer" could very well be the song of the summer, and not just because of the title. The song just has that laid back groove to it that is a prerequisite for any true song of the summer candidate... at least at the beginning. It starts out as the perfect song to play poolside or at a barbeque. (If you have particularly hip friends and family, that is...) Eventually the song speeds up tempo and becomes more... well, chaotic. It's also an obviously sexually charged song more in line with Linnea Herzog's previous band, Powerslut. This past weekend saw the return of The Town and The City Festival to downtown Lowell over Friday and Saturday. With such a stacked line up and so many bands to see, it was impossible to see them all, or even every band you wanted to see. I tried to take in as much as possible, had to make some tough decisions (or had some made for me), and had a fantastic two nights of music. I started off my night at Smokehouse Tavern to see The Only Things, , Muck and the Mires, and Linnea's Garden. I've been listening to The Only Things for years now, but this was my first time finally seeing the Lowell band live. I missed a few songs of their set, but from what I saw they out on a great show. Just some solid punk and garage rock and roll played by a group of guys just having fun with it. This weekend marks the return of The Town and the City Festival on Friday and Saturday. The festival is spread throughout downtown Lowell, MA with many of the venues within a block or two of each other. The festival is always a well run great time with something for virtually every music fan. Here's a guide to what we consider to be the highlights, which include many of our favorite artists! The Town and the City Festival continues to be one of the best smaller festivals in the northeast, and this year's line up is stellar. Held throughout Lowell, MA, this year's festival will be held April 26 and 27. In 2024, Robyn Hitchcock returns and we'll also get long standing indie rockers Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Americana artist Amythyst Kiah, Swedish singer-songwriter Sofia Talvik, and Boston indie pop sensations The Q-Tip Bandits. The festival also includes some of our absolute favorite local artists including Akrobatik, Burp, Colleen Green, Jen Kearney, Linnea's Garden, Muck & The Mires, One Fall, Orbit, Roger Miller, Sapling, Subpunch, The Chelsea Curve, The Shirt & Shoes, Tysk Tysk Task, and many, many more. Their latest single, "Comeback," has that perfect blend of glam punk you can dance to, but adds some unexpected grunge to their guitar. It also does the loud/quiet/loud thing going for it that we don't typically associate with Linnea's Garden. "Comeback" is a great mixture of being a song that totally rocks but is also a dance song. It's not a rock song you can dance to, but a rock song that is also a dance song. This is the type of song that could have easily been a local hit if Boston still had even one modern rock radio station. You can listen to "Comeback" below.
