If It's Too Loud...

The newest single from Allegra Krieger is one of the most oddly captivating singer/songwriter tracks we've heard in a while. "Nothing In This World Ever Stays Still" focuses on Krieger's vocals and songwriting, and due to these two factors the song comes so close to being a potential mainstream hit. The music is what sets this song apart from other ones in the genre. It seems fairly disjointed and almost as if it hasn't been completed, but in an obviously intended way. The effect is to make you focus almost completely on Krieger's voice and words, and gives you a just slightly uneasy feeling. It's a fascinating song that is going to make you keep listening more and more. Photo by Dallas Starky When you first start listening to the latest song from Allegra Krieger, you'd be forgiven to think it's going to be fairly standard folky/singer-songwriter fare. Sure, there are little oddball flourishes here and there, but those could be just little quirks speckled throughout "Taking It In." And then the speckles turn into these truly bizarre squalls of noise. These squalls can be pure bursts of noise, what sound like found recordings, or instruments that seem to have just be brought in for a few seconds of the song. "Taking It In" does all this without truly changing the song. It keeps the same pleasant beauty and tempo throughout. It's almost like these sounds are distractions coming from an outside source and not from within the song. Allegra Krieger is going to be an artist you'll want to watch. Photo by Liz Maney The latest from Allegra Krieger starts out as a deceptively simple song. It begins as a sparse modern indie rock/folk song. Just Kreiger's voice and some lightly strummed electric guitar. That by itself would have been enough to be completely captivating for five minutes, but more instruments slowly wander in and out. And then a gloriously change up happens and it morphs into this more aggressive rock song with clanging guitars and drums that don't quite match up to the song. And then it slowly wanders back to the original. If it's going to remind us of anything, it's a combination of Haley Heyndrickz and Lady Lamb, which is huge praise coming from me. Brooklyn's Allegra Krieger has quietly slipped in to become one of our favorite discoveries of 2020. Her latest single, "Welcome," is much more traditional folk than her previous songs have been. There is still the hints of indie rock poking through here and there, but "Welcome" is an exceptional new folk song. Despite being a relatively quiet song, it slowly changes and morphs into a downright epic while keeping what you initially love about the song intact. You can listen to "Welcome" below. Photo by Liz Maney We were mesmerized by Allegra Krieger's single "The Push and The Pull," so we're obviously thrilled to have a second single. "Rot" is far more upbeat than the title would suggest. It's the style of singer/songwriter tunes that dominated the 90's. It's much more Liz Phair than being folk. It's a relaxed mid-tempo jam, even though it has some of the most punk rock lyrics you've heard in a while. The song is about climate change deniers. With lyrics like " White savior behavior puts on a good political show /  Find a honey, make a kid /  They say it’s a kind of love like you’ve never known /  Yes, everyone is talking now /  So sure and so loud it’s impossible to recall /  How the ocean disavowed /  The ignorance of all men standing proud and tall /  But you don’t want to think, you don’t want to think," it's like Kreiger is channeling Bad Religion's attitude but tricking us all with her sweetness. Krieger isn't rewriting the rules of songwriting or the genre of indie folk. There's a lot that is familiar here... but that's perfectly ok. "The Push and the Pull" is one of the most gorgeously compelling songs you've heard all year. In its simplicity, you're sucked in by Krieger's vocals, which are simply stunning.
