Sera Cahoone - "Not How I Hoped"

You're going to want to prepare yourself for this one. "Not How I Hoped," the latest single from Sera Cahoone, is great. Like... really great. It's a heartbreak ballad that combines folk, singer-songwriter, and a little blues and country. As soon as Cahoone's vocals kick in, you're instantly hooked and hanging on her every word and inflection. This ends up being one of the most mesmerizing songs of the year, without doing anything but being a great song. It's the kind of song that anyone that has ever experienced heartbreak will end up loving, from the biggest indie snobs to the most mainstream music fans. "Not How I Hoped" has the kind of universal appeal of Lucy Dacus' "Nightshift." The reward of having a music blog is when you find a song that you know is going to end up beloved by many, and this is one of those songs.

Sera Cahoone says of her latest single:

"This song flew out of my broken heart many moons ago. It was the first song I wrote for this record. It’s quite sad, but writing it really helped me work through those hard feelings."

This new single might be the most classically shoegaze song they've released to date. It sounds like it could be a lost song from the Loveless sessions. It's filled with a heavy wall of fuzz and lumbers along at a midtempo pace. As always, Aislinn Ritchie's vocals have a slight pop sheen to them, even if they tend to take a backseat to the music surrounding her. This mixed with the absolutely punishing drums throughout "all tied up" make it a heavy shoegaze instant masterpiece. Ezra Furman - "Forever in Sunset"

Her latest single, "Forever In Sunset," combines elements of singer/songwriter fare, electronic music, and indie rock. It's an intense song that is almost a power ballad but is a little too heavy at times for that. It's a mish-mash of glam, adult contemporary, and post punk. That should not work at all, but most artists aren't Furman who apparently can do literally anything musically and make it masterful. TORRES - "I got the fear"

The musical project of Mackenzie Scott has released a new single that features her vocals and acoustic guitar that would feel at home in a neo-folk song over a pre-programmed drum beat with sounds that at times are either a light squall of guitar feedback and electronic noises. The song has this haunting and unsettling feeling to it, despite sounding like it's trying to be upbeat. I'd say art doesn't always have to be a pleasant experience, but "I got the fear" can be a pleasant listening experience, except for the times it's not.
