If It's Too Loud...

Photo by David Doobinin I'm pretty sure I've never heard ELO's song "Telephone Line" before. I even listened to it before writing this, and I'm at least ninety-five percent sure. But, I love Juliana Hatfield and virtually everything she touches, so of course I'll give her version of the song a listen or three. Her version of "Telephone Line" is a 70's style power ballad more along the lines of what ELO would sound like than classic 90's Hatfield. But it's really fun hearing Hatfield pull off a song in this style so expertly. I don't think this is going to convert me into ELO fandom, but I can see myself grooving to this one for a while. Photo by David Doobinin For the second single off Juliana Hatfield's upcoming ELO covers album, she chose "Can't Get it Out of My Head." ELO is the artist I'm least familiar with for Hatfield's Juliana Hatfield Sings... series, and I'm not sure I've ever heard ELO's original. The cover is definitely much more orchestral and easy listening than we're used to from Hatfield, but it still fits right in with what she's been doing since the 90's. It's great when an artist can pay tribute to another artist and still be able to sound like themselves. After hearing the original, Hatfield's cover is basically spot on... but with just a little bit of 90's grit added in. (I mean, we love covers and we love Juliana Hatfield, so win-win...) Now, she's adding a third to her repertoire and Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO is due out in November. ELO would be my least favorite of the three artists Hatfield has selected to cover, but even I can't resist the first single, "Don't Bring Me Down." Hatfield's version stays surprisingly close to the original, without even the slightest hint of 90's irony.
