The Ophelias - "Cicada"

Image
Photo by Frances Weger None of the singles we've heard so far from The Ophelias' upcoming album sound anything alike, yet they've all sounded like they belong on the same album. The latest, "Cicada," is an epic and orchestral alt-rock song. It's heavy on strings and could almost be a power ballad if it wasn't too heavy and just slightly too fast. Maybe it's the strings, but "Cicadas" reminds me of that dog's Retreat from the Sun  and it's more pop leaning songs. We've loved everything we've heard so far from their upcoming album, but The Ophelias are going to be a highlight of a crazy busy release week this Friday. Spencer Peppet (vocals/guitar) says of her band's latest single: "A song about how none of my exes or ex-friends use social media. It's left to me to guess what they're doing, what they look like, how they pass the time. I think sometimes it's better not to know!   "I name drop both Ludlow ...

The Ophelias - "Salome"

Image
Photo by Mikko Casta ñ o The Ophelias have released a new single off their upcoming Julien Baker produced album, and it's a truly great one. "Salome" is a mid-tempo alt-rocker bordering on pop with a grunge edge to it. The fuzzy guitars chug along with Spencer Peppet's vocals somewhere between speaking and singing, but not exactly speak-singing. The song slowly builds in menace and is sure to trigger your anxiety, but it a great way. This one is reminding me of Veruca Salt meets Cake Like without sounding like a 90's throwback. "Salome" is definitely 90's inspired, but it's a modern take on that sound. As discordant as I may have made it sound, The Ophelias inject a lot of beauty into the song. Spencer Peppet says of her band's new single: “‘Salome’ loosely follows the biblical story of (you guessed it) Salome, who danced for King Herod at his birthday celebration and was told she could ask for anything in return. She asked for the head of Jo...

The Ophelias - "Cumulonimbus"

Image
Photo by Frances Weger It's fairly hard to tie down the latest single from The Ophelias. The Julien Baker produced "Cumulonimbus" has its roots in 90's alt-rock, but it's hardly a throwback song. The band have also filled the track with plenty of modern alt-pop, creating an interesting dichotomy. As much as 90's alt-rock could have pop hooks, it rarely delved this far into pop music. The song also has a very cinematic or orchestral feel to it. "Cumulonimbus" is crafted from multiple different sounds and genres, but The Ophelias mash it all together so that it all flows together perfectly. This is a giant alt-rock track that still keeps everything sounding intimate and personal. You can watch the video for "Cumulonimbus" below. Spring Grove is due out April 4 on Get Better Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on The Ophelias, check out the band's website .
