Laetitia Sadier - "Who + What"

Image
Photo by Marie Merlet While the two previous songs from Laetitia Sadier's upcoming solo album fit in the wheelhouse of her work with Stereolab, her latest single goes in a completely different direction. "Who + What" still has the retro cool vibe that we've loved from Stereolab for decades, but the song doesn't sound anything like Sadier's other musical project. The song employs a choir and is much vocals based than we've heard from the upcoming Rooting for Love. The song has an interesting quality that is almost like a musical, where it feels like the various voices are having a conversation in song. It's an interesting and unique song style that still feels like it's from a member of Stereolab without sounding like Stereolab. You can listen to "Who + What" below. Rooting for Love is due out February 23 on Drag City Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Laetitia Sadier, check out the artist on Instagram . Upcoming to...

Laetitia Sadier - "Panser L'Inacceptable"

Image
Photo by Marie Merlet You undoubtedly know Laetitia Sadier best as a founding member of Stereolab. If you're a fan of her work with the iconic French indie band, you're also going to adore her solo work. Her latest single, "Panser L'Inacceptable," is exactly what you'd expect and want from a solo song from Sadier. It still has that ultra-hip, retro-cool sound that made Stereolab so beloved, but in a more stripped down and almost earthy version. Anything Sadier puts out has that same intriguing and impossible to resist quality, and you get that in full force here. "Panser L'Inacceptable" has a retro 60's Paris meets modern neo-folk sound, and who doesn't want that? You can watch the video for "Panser L'Inacceptable" below. Rooting for Love is due out February 26 on Drag City, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Laetitia Sadier, check out the artist on Instagram . Upcoming tour dates are below the video. Laetitia Sadier - "Une Autre Attente"

Image
Photo by Marie Merlet We haven't heard any solo music from Stereolab founder and singer Laetitia Sadier, since 2016, but luckily that has changed. The indie legend just released a new single off an upcoming album, and fans will be delighted with "Une Autre Attente." Sure, the song sounds a bit like Stereolab, which is to be expected, but "Une Autre Attente" isn't just a Stereolab song minus the other members. The song leans even more heavily into the groovy 60's world that Sadier's longstanding band dabbles in, and even adds some vintage disco into the mix. If you've been a long term fan of Sterolab, or just love a groovy tune, Laetitia Sadier is definitely going to be your thing. You can listen to "Une Autre Attente" below. Rooting for Love  is due out February 23 on Drag City Records, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp . For more on Laetitia Sadier, check out the artist on Instagram . Upcoming tour dates are below the son...

Ted Leo Covers Stereolab

Image
Not many solo guitar based artists could even dare to cover a Stereolab song, but Ted Leo isn't your average musician. The now Rhode Island based Leo just released a new EP that includes a pair of remastered and remixed rarities along with a cover of Stereolab's "Ping Pong." It's certainly not the avant-pop or electronic original, but Ted Leo uses a wall of fuzz that makes the song instantly recognizable even though it's just his guitar and vocals. That's a pretty impressive feat considering Stereolab consisted of ten musicians at the time of the recording of "Ping Pong." Plus, it's just a cool sounding cover. You can listen to Ted Leo's cover of "Ping Pong" below. Andy, Come Out EP is available now as a free download over at Bandcamp . For more on Ted Leo, check out the artist's website . Brilliant Beast Covers Stereolab

Image
With our love of cover songs, we look forward to each and every tribute album put out by The Blog That Celebrates Itself. This week saw the release of Stereolab in, Metronomic Underground Versions , their collection of Sterolab covers. To our particular delight was track one, which features one of our favorites, Brilliant Beast, covering "Wow and Flutter." Brilliant Beast, with their noisier version of shoegaze, might seem like an odd band to take on Stereolab, and they are. That's one of the main reasons this cover works. The original is a typically light and airy Sterolab song, with a jangly guitar. Brilliant Beast have a heavier version with a far crunchier guitar. It somehow still maintains the feel of the original, albeit louder and with more rock. You can listen to Brilliant Beast's cover of "Wow and Flutter" below.
