First Listen for Most of May 2025

Artist : billy woods Album : Golliwog Quick Thoughts : billy woods offers a form of modern horrorcore that isn't for everyone, and isn't even for me all the time. GOLLIWOG succeeds in embracing the darkness to an extent while also keeping its somewhat disturbing feel - "Waterproof Mascara" is legitimately one of the uncomfortable listens of recent memory. It's honestly worth the listen, although you'll know quickly whether or not its for you. Songs of Note : "Jumpscare," "Waterproof Mascara," "Misery," "STAR87," "Golgotha," "BLK ZMBY" Artist : Mclusky Album : the world is still here and so are we Quick Thoughts : Mclusky are (finally) back with new music, and it's great. Granted, the venn diagram between Mclusky and Future of the Left may as well be a circle in many regards, but in terms of the Falkous Cinematic Universe, this is the best effort they've collectively put out in a dec...

Sunday Junkie - "Fever Dream"

Image
Songs that rock as hard as "Fever Dream" does aren't usually this beautiful, but Sunday Junkie pulled it off. The Worcester band's latest is a sort of alt-rock power ballad with an emphasis on power. There's a fuzzed out guitar squall behind the track, particularly on the chorus, that could have easily ended up being abrasively noisy. While it is, it's also gorgeous. "Fever Dream" is heavy on harmonies, and is almost relaxing at times. You'll be easily swept up by the mellow beauty Sunday Junkie have created for you... until the song takes an unexpected turn and begins to auditorily pummel you, while still remaining just as lovely. We've been on the Sunday Junkie bandwagon for a while now, and "Fever Dream" has us even more happy with our choice. You can listen to "Fever Dream" below. Sunday Junkie's debut album is scheduled to be released on May 9. For more on the band, check them out on Facebook and Instagram .

Sunday Junkie - "Sister"

Image
Image courtesy Sunday Junkie Based on their previous singles, we thought we figured out the sound of Sunday Junkie. After hearing the Worcester band's latest single, we were incorrect. "Sister" still has the post-rock sound and associated noise that first drew us to the band, but "Sister" is much more melodic than we've previously heard from them. At times the song sounds more like jangle pop, and at others it's a much more mainstream version of alt-rock reminiscent of the late 90's. What ties the song to Sunday Junkie's earlier singles is that sense of post-rock, just a little more restrained sounding than we're used to. The change up in sound has us looking forward to hearing their full album once it comes out in May. You can listen to "Sister" below. Sunday Junkie's debut LP is due out on May 9. Sunday Junkie - "Holy, Holy"

Image
Photo courtesy Sunday Junkie "Holy, Holy," the latest single from Worcester duo Sunday Junkie, is one of those songs where you'll know if it's for you pretty much instantly. Something about the guitar and drums grabbed me within the first five seconds of the song. It just sounds different, and a little menacing. Maybe it's just the fact that it's called "Holy, Holy," but the vocals have an unexpected hymn-like quality that inserts itself into the dreamlike quality of the song perfectly. The song is also surprisingly beautiful, in its own little way. It ends up evolving into a sort of post-rock power ballad. Sunday Junkie seem to be exploring and discovering their sound with "Holy, Holy" and their previous two singles, "Vultures" and "Haunted Head." We're looking forward to see where they continue to go from here. Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Tom Martin says of the band's latest single: “I had issues with dr...

Sunday Junkie - "Haunted Head"

Image
Worcester's Sunday Junkie is back with a new single. The band (which features members of Not Bad Not Well) just released "Haunted Head." The new single continues their post-rock goes pop sound. This one takes bands like At the Drive In and Deftones and filters them through a unique 80's rock filter. It's almost a power ballad, but, despite having some serious pop hooks, it rocks just a little too hard for that. "Haunted Head" is the kind of song that sounds fairly familiar since it's built on top of sounds that are deeply rooted in your psyche, but ends up being completely fresh.  You can listen to "Haunted Head" below. Sunday Junkie - "Vultures"

Image
Sunday Junkie is the latest band to form from the ashes of Not Bad Not Well and just released their debut single, "Vultures." The Worcester band (which includes Tom Martin and Shawn Pelkey of Not Bad Not Well) have crafted a sound that is truly all of their own out of some of our favorite musical elements. This new single has the disjointed post-rock of the members' previous bands, but in a kind of odd more pop based sort of way. The guitar's tuning is slightly off, and the song has a kind of jerky feeling to it, but it's also a solid power pop song. It's kind of like if At the Drive In and Cheap Trick decided to jam together. Sunday Junkie have some serious potential based on their debut single. You can listen to "Vultures" below.
