Canyons and Locusts - "Love Goes Down the Drain"

Photo courtesy Canyons and Locusts You're either going to love or hate the latest from Canyons and Locusts. The Boston/Phoenix band have released a noisy nugget of a song in "Love Goes Down the Drain." It's a fast song that borders on punk with its buzzsaw guitars and abrasive (at times) vocals. It's also the kind of song that may repel you at first, but by the time its less than two minute length is over, you'll be dying to hear more. It's certainly not for everyone despite how much catchiness is hidden inside. To me it sounds like a hybrid of Husker Du and The Minutemen. Those are also bands that aren't for everyone, but people that don't like them are wrong. Vocalist/guitarist Justin Keane says of the new song: “Honestly, it's pretty simple and the first two lines of the song say it all – ‘sometimes it's out of reach, that's why love goes down the drain’. Sometimes shit just falls apart and you can't find the center anymore and t...

Canyons and Locusts - "Soo All the Way"

Photo courtesy Canyons and Locusts Boston and Phoenix based Canyons and Locusts have a new single out that's oddly suited to the cold, wintery weather we're experiencing in New England right now. "Soo All the Way" is dedicated to Sault Ste. Marie, which is the international border towns between Michigan and Ontario, aka the "Soo." The song is a quick two minute burst of noise rock meets pop that reminds me of a rougher version of Guided By Voices. It's a rough and stripped back indie rock song that packs a delightful and upbeat punch. Indie rock can be a super serious genre, and "Soo All the Way" adds a much needed jolt of joy to the sound. Guitarist/vocalist Justin Keane says of the new single: “For my work, I am part of a mentoring group based out of Sault Ste. Marie – and through that group I've met some of the coolest and nicest people in my life. One of the things they mention is that while the winters can be pretty long – and rough, b...

Canyons and Locusts - "To Art Bell"

Image
Remember when conspiracy theories were fun? Canyons and Locusts remember, and they've released a new single called "To Art Bell" about the late Coast to Coast AM radio host whose nationally broadcast radio show was dedicated to subjects like aliens and bigfoot. The song is a fuzzed out indie rock song that sounds like a sludgier Guided By Voices. It's a fun and upbeat rocker that's a fitting tribute to the radio host. It's the kind of song that's loud and thunderous, but surprisingly catchy. There seems to be a lot of Art Bell nostalgia at the moment (at least in my weirdo circles) as we remember the glory days of conspiracies. Justin Keane (vocals and guitar) says of the new song: “Somewhere in the late ‘90s when we were all scared of Y2K and the end of the world and there was just that energy – especially in NYC where Amy and I both lived at the time – I discovered Art Bell's show and would usually listen to that late at night and on into the early A...

Canyons and Locusts - "Buck Dharma's Eyes"

Image
Canyons and Locusts are a two-piece from Boston comprised of Justin Keane (vocals/guitar) and Amy Young (drums/backing vocals). The duo's new song has that garage rock fuzz Boston is famous for along with some mid 90's power pop hooks. "Buck Dharma's Eyes" is equally as melodic as it is discordant, but that's most of the fun. It's a groovy quick little rock song that is fun while having more than a little bit of an edge to it. It has a little bit of a Replacements meets The White Stripes sound going on. You can watch the video for "Buck Dharma's Eyes" below. The song will be included on the forthcoming The Red Angel EP, which is dedicated to Justine Covault.
