Live Shows: Living Colour and theWorst, Wally's, Hampton Beach, NH, 8/1/23

Image
Hampton Beach is a weird place to see a show. As much as town officials keep trying to recreate the town as a family summer vacation destination, it remains the party town of New England. It's a trashy boardwalk beach, and most live musical entertainment tends to be cover bands and bands on the nostalgia circuit. It's the kind of place where people who are already there on vacation will see a band is playing that they remember one song of and go, trying to recapture their glory days. I have to really want to see a band to go there during the summer. I was on the fence with the Living Colour show at Wally's, but once theWorst were added to the bill, it became a must see. Let's get this part out of the way: Guitarist Vernon Reid fell off the stage before the band played even one note. He approached the front of the stage carrying his guitar and took a tumble right off. This is something that cancels entire tours, and the man is sixty four, so the night could have ended be...

theWorst - "Couldn't Stay Away"

Image
Photo by Joe Macfadzen Of all the songs we've heard from theWorst's upcoming album, "Couldn't Stay Away" sounds the most like traditional punk. On this one, the Maine trio are just straight up bringing the rock with feedback soaked pop punk guitars. Just the slightest hints of emo come through on this one. It's more like 80's Joan Jett went pop punk. "Couldn't Stay Away" has that garage rock grit blended with the sheen of pop punk. This one is a ton of fun, and if modern rock radio was still a thing in New England this one could have been a massive local hit. You can watch the video for "Couldn't Stay Away" below. Yes Regrets is due out June 3. For more on theWorst, check out the band's website . Upcoming tour dates are below the video. June 4th - New Haven, CT - Cafe Nine June 9th - Newmarket, NH - Stone Church Music Club June 10th - Albany, NY - Pauly's Hotel June 11th - Brooklyn, NY - Pet Rescue August 6th - Searsmont...

theWorst - "Hurt Forever"

Image
Photo by Joe Macfadzen For their latest single, Portland, ME trio theWorst brought in their friend Tony Bevilacqua of The Distillers. "Hurt Forever" lives in a world between genres. You're going to hear a lot of modern and contemporary punk and emo here. There is definitely the edge of punk and the heartfelt sincerity of emo, but this isn't an early 2000's Warped Tour band here. "Hurt Forever" also has the fuzz and aggression of bands that broke out in the wave of grunge and were lumped into that category despite not being grunge, like L7 or Dinosaur Jr. theWorst are making music that truly lives in between all of those sounds. Brooke Binion says of the new song: “When you’re manic, it’s like your brain is making decisions that you don’t agree with but you’re doing them anyway. There’s a lot of impulsivity and that feeling of knowing something is a terrible idea but suddenly you’re doing it.” You can watch the video for "Hurt Forever" below. Ye...

theWorst - "Monomania"

Image
Photo by Joe Macfadzen We first discovered Portland, ME's theWorst when they teamed up with Dana Colley of Morphine for a song. On their latest, they brought in another friend. This time it's Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Nth Power) for "Monomania." This new song isn't quite as indie punk as we're used to from the trio. Instead, it leans more towards straight up alt-rock with an oddly danceable beat. That does make sense, given that Glaspie has played drums for Beyonce in the past. But "Monomania" isn't a pop song. This is heavy alt-rock with a pop twist. Guitarist/vocalist Brooke Binion says of the band's new song: “When you’re manic, it’s like your brain is making decisions that you don’t agree with but you’re doing them anyway. There’s a lot of impulsivity and that feeling of knowing something is a terrible idea but suddenly you’re doing it.” You can watch the video for "Monomania" below. Yes Regrets is due out June 3. theWorst - "Jim's Song"

Image
Alternative Press has called theWorst "... the glorious love child of Joan Jett & Kurt Cobain." That comparison is going to make perfect sense once you hear "Jim's Song." The new track has all the pop sensibility and punk snarl you'd hear in a Joan Jett song mixed with the grunge guitar of Nirvana. It's the kind of song that is just dripping with attitude while still having a killer pop hook. Typically we hear songs that distinctly choose to go more pop or more punk edge, but "Jim's Song" stands defiantly on the line refusing to pick a side.  You can watch the video for "Jim's Song" below. The song will be on the upcoming album Yes Regrets  due out in 2022. For more on theWorst, check out the band's website .

theWorst - "Yes Regrets"

Image
Hailing from Portland, ME, theWorst have been called "... the glorious love child of Joan Jett and Kurt Cobain" by Alternative Press. I hate to just cop what another music writer said, but in the case of their newest single, it fits too perfectly not to. "Yes Regrets" is loud, guitar heavy rock with a little 80's pop sensibility thrown in. It's noisy, but not too noisy. It's driving punk rock in the way that Nirvana were punk, but with Jett's attitude and hit making abilities. Plus, it features Dana Colley of Morphine on baritone saxophone so you know they've got some serious indie cred. You can watch the video for "Yes Regrets" below. theWorst's new album will be out in 2021 on RascalZRecordZ. For more on theWorst, check out their website .
