All of those descriptions meet up perfectly in the duo's latest single, "Hourglass." "Hourglass" has a little bit of a cabaret feel to it, while still being distinctly country. Anne Malin Ringwalt's vocals seem particularly vulnerable on this track. Plus, there is some wonderfully horrific noise that comes in towards the end, with nothing else truly changing. Is it feedback? Metal on metal? Some unknown instrument being mercilessly abused? Whatever it is, it adds to the song perfectly. Photo by Rachel Winslow Gothic country duo Anne Lamin recently moved to Nashville after some time in Indiana. They had planned to record their next album at The Bomb Shelter with a collection of Nashville musicians, but then the pandemic hit. Instead, they recorded their new album at home. One of the songs they recorded ("Child"), has one of the more interesting takes on country we've heard in a while. It's an upbeat, twangy country song that stops just shy of being foot-stomping. But, there's also some elements of modern mainstream Americana present. And of course, being that this is Anne Malin, "Child" has some incredibly dark undertones. (Gothic country and all...) Photo by Rachel Winslow Gothic country should be a much bigger genre. the duo known as Anne Malin recently moved from South Bend, IN to Nashville, and are set to release their second album. The first single, "Empty is the Day," may not be for everyone, but it really should be. The song is gorgeous, but also a rough listen. The song is purposefully painful, almost like traditional country listened to through an dark prism. "Haunted" is a cliched description for music, but "Empty is the Day" sounds truly haunted, almost as if singer Anne Malin Ringwalt simply needs to exorcise herself the song in order to be free of it.
