Big Thief - "Mythological Beauty"

We were pretty into Big Thief's debut album Masterpiece last year, and assumed we'd be waiting a while for a follow up. Maybe a song or two here or there, but certainly not a full album.

We would be wrong. Capacity, Big Thief's sophomore album, will be out on June 9. Right now we can listen to the first song from that album, "Mythological Beauty." "Mythological Beauty" is a lot more tame and quiet than most of Masterpiece was. A lot of the songs on their previous album had a noisier 90s indie rock sound to them. "Mythological Beauty" goes more on the quiet side. Like, really quiet. It's definitely not folk (which is odd since I predicted that they'd play the Newport Folk Festival last year, and somehow going more quiet makes them sound less folk), but instead has that feel of late 90s ballads by The Smashing Pumpkins. It's an interesting switch that has me really intrigued for their upcoming album.

Capacity will be out June 9 on Saddle Creek. The album can be pre-ordered here. You can watch the video for "Mythological Beauty" below. For more on Big Thief, be sure to check out their website.
