Tunic - "Invalid"

Image
Photo by Adam Kelly The latest song from Tunic has been kicking around for a while. According to their press release, "Invalid" has gone through three different versions and survived three band line ups. On its current version, it's a blistering art punk track. It sounds like it would have been right at home with Dischord in the early 90's, but with some Nirvana In Utero  era thrash. It's not a fully pleasant listen, but Tunic isn't meant for that. Of course, if Dischord meets late era Nirvana sounds like your cup of tea, "Invalid" is going to be downright thrilling to you.  Tunic explains the meaning behind their new song: " Our new track, 'Invalid,' addresses the constant feeling of judgement from your peers, parents, and more importantly yourself. There is a guilt you feel for allowing your adolescent dreams to run your adult life." You can listen to "Invalid" below. Exhaling is due out April 9 on Artoffact Records. You...

Tunic - "Fade Out"

Image
Photo by Adam Kelly Winnipeg's Tunic aren't a quiet band. Their new single, "Fade Out," reflects that despite the heartbreaking subject matter. Singer/guitarist David Schellenberg is the co-owner of a venue. In a four year span, he watched his business partner be diagnosed with MS, and slowly lose vision in both eyes. Eventually he had to step down from his position. "Fade Out" is about that in a shockingly loud way. It's a two minute burst of frantic noise punk. The song sounds desperate and just barely under control, with wailing guitars, driving drums, and screaming vocals. It's just about as intense as you could expect from a three piece following some semblance of song structure. David Schellenberg explains the song on their upcoming release: “I’m not one to write about situations/emotions that I haven’t lived through. I need that catharsis of screaming about these things over and over again. These are all things that have unfolded in my life an...

Tunic - "Exhaling"

Image
To be fair, I don't know much about Winnipeg except that professional wrestlers Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega come from there. Obviously they're going to have a music scene, but this is not a band I would expect to come from Manitoba. "Exhaling" is the first song on Tunic's forthcoming album. The band's Bandcamp bio calls them "noise rock," "atonal punk," and "feedback laden filth," and I certainly can't argue that too much. But "Exhaling" is hardly the burst of pure discordant noise you'd expect from those descriptions. There are just the slightest hints of standard song structure here and even the tiniest bit of melody, so as noisy and atonal as this song is, it's not a completely challenging listen. You might not even have to be a total noise rock fan to enjoy it, although that wouldn't hurt. Tunic say about the new song: " Our new song, 'Exhaling,'  is about the depression you feel when y...
