First Listen: New Releases for 6 October 2023

Artist: Tele Novella
Album: Poet's Tooth
Quick Thoughts: Tele Novella describes their music on Spotify as "coin-operated medieval country songs through a 1950s western lens," and I can't find a better way to describe the entire package here. It's a soft, familiar listen with highlights throughout, and with a perspective and aesthetic that feels pure and authentic. This was a great listen this week, and comes highly recommended.
Songs of Note: "Young & Free," "Hard-Hearted Way," "The Unicorn," "Changeless Kingdom," "Poet's Tooth"

Artist: Family Obligation
Album: Grow Up
Quick Thoughts: I don't know how I tripped up on "Black Hole" a few weeks back, but this sort of indie pop-punk warms my heart and Family Obligation is amazing at it. Hooks for days, it's noisy and melodic with a little attitude and a lot of fun. This band has largely flown under the radar so far, but deserves to be huge, and this album absolutely deserves a spot in your rotation.
Songs of Note: "Black Hole," "The Feedback," "Ride," "This Mind"

Artist: Dorian Electra
Album: Fanfare
Quick Thoughts: A good week for the hyperpop lovers, between this and Hannah Diamond. Dorian Electra's androgynous musical efforts get more and more layered and complex with each release, and Fanfare leans on classical, on samples, on all sorts of interesting and memorable tracks. While Electra's music can be an acquired taste, there's more than enough here to hook even those who haven't connected with this genre yet. I loved this, and you should give it a try.
Songs of Note: "Symphony," "Freak Mode," "Sodom & Gomorrah," "Manmade Horrors," "anon," "Lifetime"

Artist: Hello June
Album: Artifacts
Quick Thoughts: Ken sent this over to me, and if I heard Hello June before, I couldn't remember. I wish I had, though, because this is great roots music from an underappreciated artist. "23" locked itself in my head all weekend, but each song feels authentic and unique all at once, and deserves your time. One of the best of recent weeks.
Songs of Note: "Sometimes," "23," "No Easy Answer," "California"

Artist: Tea Eater
Album: Obsession
Quick Thoughts: I wanted to give a shout-out to Tea Eater, which is another indie pop-punk act with a little more edge to it. Some of the songs are crazy short, others crazy great, but this is an album that surprised me this week and will likely surprise you, too.
Songs of Note: "Double," "Fuck the DMV," "The Taste"
