Molly O'Leary - "Marigold"

New Bedford, MA's Molly O'Leary recorded their upcoming album in Nashville with Will Hoge, and has the title track off the album out now. "Marigold" is an alt-singer/songwriter track that dances with the mainstream but never quite fully commits. It's a song that is quiet but still intense. O'Leary adds some of the more interesting instrumentation into the song, giving it a unique sound and feel. There is some twang to the song, showing that it was recorded in Nashville, but it's definitely not a country track. Nothing in "Marigold" breaks any musical rules, and the instruments used are standard for the genre, but O'Leary just crafts the song together in a way that makes it sound completely original. They're an artist we'll be keeping a close eye on in the near future.

Molly O'Leary says of their new single:

“I wrote ‘Marigold’ for one of my best friends who was/is going through a hard time with grief and loss. I wrote it to let her know that, even though I can't change things, I will always sit with her through the grief. Marigold flowers symbolize the sun and light and hope. They connect us with loved ones who have passed onto the next life, which is why they're used in the Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico. For this reason, I had an artist and good friend of mine who lives in Mexico (Frida Garcia) paint the artwork for the album/single cover.”

You can listen to "Marigold" below. Marigold, the album, is due out February 23. For more on Molly O'Leary, check out the artist's website. Their album release show is scheduled for February 24 at Askew in Providence.
