First Listen: New Releases for 4 April 2025

Artist: Momma
Album: Welcome to My Blue Sky
Quick Thoughts: Momma is one of the more polished indie acts out there right now, with Welcome to My Blue Sky offering the sort of breakthrough feel that a lot of bands try and strive for. I've been addicted to "Ohio All the Time" for a while now, and it's great to hear that the rest of the album features similarly sharp songwriting and production. Don't miss out on this one.
Songs of Note: "I Want You (Fever)," "Stay All Summer," "Last Kiss," "Bottle Blonde," "Ohio All the Time"

Artist: Sister Ray
Album: Believer
Quick Thoughts: I've enjoyed Sister Ray for a while, and the sort of darkish singer-songwriter stuff always grabs me. Believer, their second album, definitely feels like a refining of the sound that grabbed me early on, and songs like "Wings" and "Chance" are highly likely to grab you, as well. Give it a listen.
Songs of Note: "Believer," "Wings," "Magic," "Chance"

Artist: Brown Horse
Album: All the Right Weaknesses
Quick Thoughts: Twangy indie is my thing, and Brown Horse brings it in spades. The vibe is a kind of bright, summery package - an alt-country comfort package despite being from the UK - that wears its influences on its sleeve. A great listen this week.
Songs of Note: "Verna Bloom," "Wisteria Vine," "Corduroy Couch," "Tombland," "Far Off Places"

Artist: The Kilograms
Album: Beliefs and Thieves
Quick Thoughts: The Kilograms are a new ska band with a pedigree of ska royalty. Featuring members of the Bosstones and Bouncing Souls, this feels like a more pure version of early American ska than some of the more popular / populist ska of the 1990s wave. I really, really enjoyed this one - lots to love here even if ska isn't your favorite genre.
Songs of Note: "Faith and Love," "Ya Ya," "Beliefs and Thieves

Artist: City Planners
Album: Plastic and Metal
Quick Thoughts: Ken sent this one my way and they might just be one of my new favorites. This reminds me, of all things, an old Boston band, Star Ghost Dog: shart indie pop with an alt angle to it, and hooks to spare for days. I think "Oh No" is going to be in constant rotation for some time, and songs like "Angles Are Everywhere" is a sneaky great track that could be radio-ready in the right circumstances. Worth your time for sure.
Songs of Note: "Doing Fine," "Rachel Carson," "Blue Jacket," "Period Living," "Oh No," "Angles Are Everywhere"
