R Loomes - "Passerine"

Sheffield dark folk artist R Loomes (member of Sister Wives) has a new single out that is as beautiful as it is dark. "Passerine" can almost lull the listener into a sense of calm without them realizing just how dark the song is. It's undeniably haunting, but not in a negative way. It's the perfect single for those of us that find joy and beauty in darkness, without being too dark for the average music fan. R Loomes gets compared to artists like Jeff Buckley and Emma Ruth Rundle, and after hearing "Passerine," you won't be able to disagree. 

R Loomes says of her latest single:

"This song came about after spending a full day at the studio. It fell out in the last 10 minutes of the day and I wrote the lyrics on my phone on the way home as it was so stuck in my head. Its about the passing of time and the things we collect as a reminder of its ephemerality.. It's a split dialogue to myself, to love and the collective whole."

This new single might be the most classically shoegaze song they've released to date. It sounds like it could be a lost song from the Loveless sessions. It's filled with a heavy wall of fuzz and lumbers along at a midtempo pace. As always, Aislinn Ritchie's vocals have a slight pop sheen to them, even if they tend to take a backseat to the music surrounding her. This mixed with the absolutely punishing drums throughout "all tied up" make it a heavy shoegaze instant masterpiece. Ezra Furman - "Forever in Sunset"

Her latest single, "Forever In Sunset," combines elements of singer/songwriter fare, electronic music, and indie rock. It's an intense song that is almost a power ballad but is a little too heavy at times for that. It's a mish-mash of glam, adult contemporary, and post punk. That should not work at all, but most artists aren't Furman who apparently can do literally anything musically and make it masterful. Ezra Furman says of her new song: “The biggest influence on the lyrics of this song is a conversation I had with a friend of mine. The Boy Detective - "I Renounce Verdukianism!"

Maybe because it's because I went to a bunch of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' Hometown Throwdowns, but I oddly associate ska-punk with Christmas and New Year's Eve. The Boy Detective are here to help me out with their latest holiday single, "I Renounce Verdukianism!" The song gets it's title from a made up religion from 30 Rock , and it's a fast and funny track about the chaos that comes with the holidays. It's definitely leaning into the punk side of ska-punk, and is just a fun song about Christmas. If you grew up in the midst of third wave ska, "I Renounce Verdukianism!" is going to resonate with you.
