The song is rooted in classic, vintage country, but the song isn't truly traditional. Hale's vocals seem like they would be more at home in an indie rock song, and there is something twisted about the song musically. "Dear Girl" may take a second or two for you to adjust to, like the musical equivalent of walking outside on a sunny day. Her latest song, "Drunk On You," is a modern torch ballad with some of the most laid back slide guitar ever recorded. The song is rooted in old timey country, but with a modern sensibility. It doesn't sound like a throwback, but has the same spirit as classic country. Not many vintage country songs start off with the line "If whiskey were a woman I'd fuck her," just to show what kind of country ballad you're getting into here.
